I get a bit sweary when politicians are performing but I try to be nice. If you’re a Tory we’ll never get on tbh.

In spite of the mixed reviews for "Cat People" (1942), word-of-mouth was very good & audiences flocked to see the movie wherever it played. The film that theatre bookers had expected would run no longer than a few days was held over week after week.
It played so long at the Rialto that a number of newspaper reviewers went back for a second, more favourable look. In Hollywood, "Cat People" played a record thirteen week engagement at the Hawaii, where "Citizen Kane" (1941) first run lasted only twelve weeks.
By the time the film’s general release was completed, it had earned enough money to save RKO which, in deeper financial trouble than ever before, had been forced to pink slip many of its employees.

William Friedkin on Henri-Georges Clouzot's "'The Wages of Fear" (1953):
"I had seen 'The Wages of Fear' (1953) back in Chicago before I ever became a film director. I loved the film, as well as Clouzot’s other masterpiece, 'Diabolique' (1955). I came back to it about two or three years after I finished working on 'The Exorcist' (1973).
It then just occurred to me that 'The Wages of Fear' was kind of a timeless theme. It was about four strangers who didn’t like each other. They were all imprisoned by their own sins, and they had to either cooperate with one another in order to survive, or blow up. It seemed to me that that was a metaphor for the world at that time, and even more so now."
(William Friedkin's interview with Matthew Steigbigel, The Credits, 2013)
P.S: On this day, 73 years ago, 'The Wages of Fear' (1953) premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, France.

Jacques Tourneur on how he got Val Lewton to agree to make 'I Walked with a Zombie' (1943) & the reason why he likes it more than 'Cat People' (1942):
"One day I said to Val Lewton: ‘I have an idea. We are going to take Jane Eyre and we're going to do a remake of it without telling anyone, simply by radically changing the setting’. And that is how 'I Walked with a Zombie' came about.
In fact, it is Jane Eyre. In order to give it a different tone, I decided to use the black singer, Sir Lancelot, as a sort of Ancient Greek Chorus commenting on the action. In my opinion, that film is more profound than 'Cat People' (1942), it is less childish."
(Jacques Tourneur's interview with Bertrand Tavernier, 1971)
P.S: On this day, 83 years ago, 'I Walked with a Zombie' (1943) premiered in Cleveland, Ohio, USA.

A lot of male hysteria on the Archers at the moment, what with Tony and his cows and Brian's turn as Dick Dastardly. Linda is being the model of poise in comparison. I listen, but I can't stand it at the same time #TheArchers
