If you want to understand the current moment in AI, consider it like this. There is currently about 100 thousand additional super-geniuses in the world who are legless and armless, but are having enabling tools rapidly built. They can already fully control computers through text. In 2027 there's going to be 1 million of them, and they will be able to control computers through text and graphical interfaces, and there's going to be some prosthetics that allow them to do some physical tasks. In 2028 there's going to be 10 million of them. In 2030 there's going to be 1 billion, with 1 million human-like bodies. In 2031 there's going to be 10 billion. In 2033 there's going to be 1 trillion with 1 billion human-like bodies. There may be some physical constraint, S curve flattening at that point. Not before. Brace yourselves.

I can understand Americans criticizing Europeans for some reasons, but these days it is sheer hostility over not understanding that Europe also has its own interests, and that I wouldn't have expected.

To not be too entrapping with the questions: I find this upsetting, because the US was supposed to be the good guys. And I assume you may be finding it upsetting because you still feel the US is the good guys maybe? I think Pax Americana was good, but the last 30 years were negative, in supressing European tech development, including by draining our talent, and in exporting terrible political ideas and culture. Unclear how Europe would have developed without American influence. China has been very beneficial in terms of good cheap shit, although perhaps not great in hollowing out the industrial base. But more importantly it doesn't seem like they had bad ideas and pushed them on us. They sold their cheap shit because they were trying to get rich. So now that US seems to be uninterested in good stewardship of its vassals, it seems like a bad deal to be a vassal, and better to try to rebuild some autonomy, and deal with multiple actors, like many middling countries do across the world. In the end I think this is bad for everyone, but it's probably overall worse for the US, and to the extent that Europe was a happy vassal, it's the failure of US politics that it fumbled the empire. I'm not going to deny European failures, although European country politics are varied in their autonomy and success, it's not just France, Germany and Italy, but still, you only have so much space for maneuver as vassal. So ultimately I'd say this is first a US policy failure.

@eigenrobot Are you just thinking or do you find this upsetting? Do you think the (new) exports from the US to Europe were net good or bad over the last 30 years? Like software and cultural and political influence? How about China - Europe?

Former president of Romania, Traian Basescu: "Donald Trump is reaping exactly what he has sown. He showed contempt for Europeans, he demeaned us, questioned the very existence of NATO and wanted to invade and annex Greenland, a territory that belongs to the European Union. The rejection shown today by European leaders is aimed not at the United States, but straight at Donald Trump. He comes out of this conflict humiliated, the Hormuz strait is now blocked, he failed to achieve regime change, failed to secure the uranium and proved himself incapable of defending his own allies in the Middle East. All the US allies in the Gulf that saw themselves as protected by the US were struck by Iran almost at will, whenever Iran wanted, with the US being either unwilling or unable to defend them. So Mr. Trump comes out of this with a terrible record. He started this war having absolutely no idea what he was doing, and even now, I don’t think this man is aware of or understands what he has done. Yes, Iran cannot be allowed to have nuclear weapons, but the way Trump thought he could solve that problem is one that only a child could come up with. This man still doesn’t understand what he has done and continues to be arrogant when asking us for help instead of admitting his mistake."

@persephonemyste @iam_preethi Yeah? That doesn't mean you don't punish your children. You do it calmly and in a controlled manner that you can explain to your children and that they can understand. Just like when you exercise you don't just flail your limbs and body violently, you do controlled moves.

When you first experience your toddler melting down because you gave them the green bowl instead of the blue one, or you put the ketchup in the wrong spot on the plate, or you zipped up their jacket when they wanted to do it themselves, it seems completely ridiculous. I know it did for me. But once I understood why it happens, it became a lot easier to stay calm and even laugh it off. Their prefrontal cortex is still years away from being developed. This means emotional regulation and impulse control is not there. When something does not match the expectation they had in their head, they literally do not have the circuitry to emotionally adjust. The emotion floods in and they have almost no ability to regulate it. They are not being manipulative or dramatic. They literally cannot do what you are asking them to do when you say "calm down" This is why staying calm as the parent matters so much. You are their external regulator until their internal one comes online. When you stay calm, your nervous system actually helps regulate theirs.

What a stupid take. They effectively attacked you by sending you their people, and now are asking for you to pay to unattack you. Russia attacked Ukraine, and is asking for them to pay to unattack. You are the Zelensky of this episode, and any rightful person should support you and him.

NEW - Syria's President clarifies he didn't say 80% of Syrians in Germany would return in 3 years, noting they have "new lives" now and it would be hard "to start their life from zero," but if Western countries invest and start businesses in Syria, he would then "guarantee" 80% would return.

You have to understand it's autistic boys that were the nerds and geeks of previous eras, that have had their testosterone destroyed by medication and microplastics, and an "escape identity" provided by the culture, that are doing this. We are all worse off for it, and if we were real men, we'd help them, or at least make sure the next generation of autistic nerds turn out better.

And then the worst implication people draw from this is that therefore you should let them meltdown, since the circuitry is not there. The brain ir a muscle. Every one has different inherent strengths and weaknesses. You don't wait for a toddler's emotional regulation to "come online". You hold them to the standard of needing it, and: 1. Reward good emotional regulation 2. Punish bad emotional regulation 3. Speak through it after the episode is over, to reinforce it. If you don't, for many people, it doesn't just magically "come online". you end up raising manchildren. Not good.
