What Nature doesn’t tell readers is that this same source has been ranting about NIH for over a year, cherry-picking every negative angle he can find — and mocking people like me who disagree.

This is really fucking simple. Don’t as law enforcement officers in a matter of seconds shove people onto the ground, pepper spray their faces, and then start beating the shit out of them. That’s escalation and excessive force.

If these guys are going to charge around like maniacs, pushing people so hard they fly into the snow, and then reflexively blast pepper-spray, all within seconds, they either have catastrophic lack of self-control, or have deliberately chosen to rapidly escalate these situations

I sense a new form of virtue signaling coming in which one advertises the fact that they wrote it without AI. Sigh. I’d like to think we can now measure the value of something by the content itself rather than the amount of time spent making it, as is often the case in academia.

@OdedRechavi It’s impossible for me to disentangle that grants = the livelihoods of the people in my lab. So grants, and it’s not even close. Preprints have also taken much of the pressure off of publishing—the papers are out there, and people can read them.

What hurts you more - getting a paper rejected or getting a grant rejected? I know grant rejections are probably worst in terms of consequences, but paper rejections are somehow more emotional (for me). Depends on the paper and grant of course (and how urgently you need the money or publication), but I’m asking in general.

SUMMARY OF H-1B EXECUTIVE ORDER - ENTRY BAN: No H-1B visa holder may enter the United States beginning Sunday September 21st, including current visa holders, unles they pay $100K to enter. - VISA FEE: New H-1B and H-1B extensions must pay 100K to be processed and 100K per year every year thereafter to maintain them. This will effectively end the H-1B program completely. No one, even the highest paid at 500K will be paying an extra 100K a year to the government. It will destroy the health care, higher education, and technology sectors as we know them if this isn't struck down in court.

It's fun to think about this little diagram again many years after drawing it. It occurs to me that the very notion of "mechanism" is an intrinsically biological concept, in many ways a byproduct of the mostly causality-based style of science inherent to the field.
