How did we modern people become so low-quality by historical standards? I imagine it’s some combination of how we were raised, and our environment. Are we the only batch of humans that thinks so lowly of ourselves while comparing ourselves to previous batches?

@thoroughblessed Perhaps techically, depending how you define "officially depressed." But while suffering from the malady is a condition precedent to a proper medical diagnosis, getting an official diagnosis is not required for one to be suffering from it.

Is it correct that a person is not officially depressed until they’re diagnosed with depression by a medical professional who specializes in brain stuff?

Considering that I may have been conflating a person navigating the symptoms, while trying to be better, with that person being proud of the disease. They didn’t choose that lot and they can’t just stop. They’re doing their best to make the best of where they found themselves.

@LexJaeger @broopski Wouldn’t it make more sense to lightly tax refined sugar, as well, then? Lots of people paying a relatively small amount, instead of a few people paying a relatively large amount. Smaller tax on tobacco and a small tax on refined sugar and no embezzlement.

Why does refined sugar cost so much less than tobacco while both are addictive and known to contribute to cancer? Is it because refined sugar has calories and can be considered a food, making it non-taxable?
