🇨🇳 China’s Defense Minister Warns U.S.: Don’t “Meddle in Our Affairs” Over Hormuz
China issued its sharpest direct warning to Washington Monday as the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports took effect, with Defense Minister Admiral Dong Jun making clear Beijing intends to keep transiting the Strait of Hormuz through its agreements with Tehran, according to comments reported in India Today.
“Our ships are moving in and out of the waters of the Strait of Hormuz. We have trade and energy agreements with Iran. We will respect and honor them and expect others not to meddle in our affairs. Iran controls the Strait of Hormuz, and it is open for us,” Dong said.
China’s Foreign Ministry separately called a Hormuz blockade contrary to global interests. “Keeping the Strait of Hormuz safe, stable and unimpeded serves the interest of the international community,” spokesman Guo Jiakun said, urging all parties to “abide by the temporary ceasefire arrangements” and avoid resumed hostilities.
Analysts say Dong’s remarks signal that any U.S. attempt to intercept Chinese vessels would risk direct confrontation with the People’s Liberation Army Navy. Brent crude rallied as much as 8.6% to over $103 a barrel Monday before dropping below $100, while European gas futures spiked nearly 18%, per Bloomberg.
