As Parliament returns, Australians are once again being pushed into blaming one another for an economy that feels increasingly out of reach. Young against old. Renters against owners. Workers against investors. Australians should not be forced into resentment politics while housing becomes harder to afford and the cost of living keeps rising. A stronger Australia is built by encouraging people to work, save, invest, build businesses and create homes — not by punishing aspiration. The backlash to the Federal Budget shows many Australians are deeply uneasy about the direction the country is heading. Payroll tax is a tax on employing people. Think about how insane that is for a moment. The more workers a business hires, the more successful it becomes, and the more wages it pays, the more the government punishes it with additional tax. Payroll tax actively discourages businesses from hiring more Australians. It increases the cost of employment, reduces wage growth, and adds yet another layer of bureaucratic compliance and paperwork onto businesses already drowning in regulation. Even mainstream economists recognise that payroll taxes are largely passed onto workers through lower wages, reduced hiring, or higher prices. You cannot tax employment and then act surprised when jobs become more scarce and expensive. The Libertarian Party believes work should be rewarded, not punished. We would abolish payroll tax entirely and make it cheaper and easier for businesses to hire Australians, grow their operations, and create jobs.
