Everclear (95% ABV) is already distilled to near-purity, but it still carries trace congeners: higher alcohols (fusel oils like isoamyl), aldehydes, esters, and ketones leftover from fermentation. These cause the sharp solvent bite, harsh burn, and faster intoxication. Brita’s coconut-shell activated carbon is a sponge with enormous internal surface area—hundreds of square meters per gram. Impurity molecules stick to it via van der Waals forces and hydrophobic interactions. Ethanol and water (small, polar) mostly flow through untouched. The built-in ion-exchange resin also grabs stray minerals/ions. One smooth pass noticeably tames the “bite” because congeners adsorb more strongly than ethanol. Result: smoother, more neutral spirit that mixes cleaner and goes down easier, though it can taste a bit blander. Limits: ABV barely drops. It polishes, doesn’t magically age or improve character. Over-filtering risks slight ethanol loss or saturation. Best for cocktails or shots if you prefer less roughness. Game-changer for budget neutral base.
