This is a problem *right now*. I graduated last year and some people passed a four year mechanical engineering degree without going into the shop *one time* and >3.8GPA. Students were often taught GD&T before being taught how to use a mill. Tuition was approx $60K a year. We need a skills based aptitude test at the end of the course. If you can’t use a hand drill you fail and can’t graduate for another year.

@EndCulturalWar @x0_MeatSuit @FurkanGozukara What rates are you hearing for redwood? I get mixed reports. Making 95%+ battery grade at low rates is hard, and a great milestone, but high rates is very very difficult. Curious where they are on the rate aspect?

Massive geopolitical shift. NHK World confirms Japan has perfected a revolutionary process to extract high purity lithium from dead batteries with a staggering 90 percent recovery rate. This brilliant technological leap guarantees Japan's absolute economic security.

Interesting - I fully disagree with this take, let me explain why: - Limiting critical mineral sourcing to a single country as we have been is a fast way to become dependant. Dependance can be profitable in the short term, but as we are learning painfully now, it is incredibly risky. - We will need stunning amounts of lithium to keep up with battery and energy demand; this is an industry everyone needs to get their foot in the door on before it’s too late. This is a global race and the finish line is depressingly far away. - Lithium extraction is a great way to start being profitable in cell recycling before you get to some of the more exotic elements. - Good lithium extraction is a great way to showcase that you have a high purity materials stream to do further extraction on and showcases competence in executing chemical manufacturing scopes. It becomes much easier to approach people requesting for investment for extraction process expansion, or even making your own cells. - Recycled lithium is in many ways easier to refine than mined lithium. Contrary to other recycled products, recycled cell materials are often higher quality than those produced from new materials. In short, we needed vast quantities of lithium yesterday and demand is only going to grow. We need to diversify, we need to close the loop and lithium is a great stepping stone to more profitable steps. Question: I get mixed reports about redwood. How much battery grade lithium (95%+ purity, that’s where the big payables on that product stream are) are they producing per month?

A number of other operators have already achieved 90%+ lithium recovery at commercial scales. For example, Redwood Materials in the US have been regularly recovering over 95% of key critical minerals from end-of-life batteries for years. Don’t get me wrong, Japan’s advancement is welcome, but framing it as a ‘massive geopolitical shift’ or ‘absolute economic security’ is an overstatement.

Building a gigantic statue on the Moon would be much easier… No wind, very low gravity, no oxidation… We could bring hundreds of very thin metal panels, form them on the Moon, and assemble them around a very light structure.

@ChinaUncensored This is a good illustration of why earth pressure balance Tunnel Boring Machines are such worthwhile projects. The lack of geological understanding is inexcusable though. Guy I worked with said a screw in a TBM he was driving failed and flooded the tunnel in under 7 minutes.

This is the Ningnan Tunnel, under construction at the Yanjiang Expressway in Sichuan. Sudden flood washes everything away. No word on the workers. Very little coverage inside China.

@cherniav I’m leaning towards it being true. I watched a lot of grads fail to ever apply knowledge in college, and then only land non-technical roles where they weren’t solving anything. It would be really easy to come out of roles like that and be unhirable 15 years later.

@bscholl @hidden_whale Are you including power, concrete pours and tooling in this estimate? $1M seems high for the plain unit, but with utilities and infrastructure that could be a very reasonable cost. Transformer upgrades for a machine shop can bite your wallet hard.

People thought Boom would never be able to make our own engine. So we decided to up the ante and make our own engine *parts*. The first vertically-integrated part is now finished: a tie bolt for the high-pressure core machined of inconel 718, an ultra-hard nickel alloy

@KennethCassel Not to mention the data they get from products you want, but that don’t exist yet. Today I would have been showing that AI that McM should sell a bearing with a 52mm housing to fit other SKUs, but with a 20mm ID rather than a 25mm ID because there are no 25mm clevis pins 😂

@KennethCassel Think how big this is for the McMaster moat. McMaster currently bets that they can source anything for you faster and will give you all the product datasheets/info, but now you can ask questions about the product without ever knowing where they source it from.

This bastard bolt came out of a machine that processes metal scrap. They can quote a 5-6 week lead time because they're the only game in town. It has a non-standard 1 1/4"-8 thread and maybe a 60 degree flathead. Challenge accepted.

We used a “Living hinge” to make this small sheet metal lock box! It’s common wood working trick but translates really well to laser cut metal.
