@hissgoescobra It wasn’t that different- Rabin was shrewd enough to know they could only move so far without losing support. Netanyahu is just more open over how disdainful they are of anyone who stands between them.

I have been struggling a lot, as have many other former Republicans who traditionally supported Israel, by the turn it has taken with figures like Ben Gvir. I will write about this, but suffice to say here the Yitzhak Rabin Israel feels so different from the Netanyahu Israel.

The Spring 2026 issue of @AmericanAffairs is out. @SenToddYoung argues American sea power has deteriorated and what we can do to get it back, @sophiabulla1 examines whether Washington has any real framework for evaluating what frontier AI labs are building, and @LimasHeberto traces how American finance abandoned industry for private equity and asks what it would take to reverse that.

AOC says "rivers were on fire" because of corporations like Deloitte "pouring chemicals" into waterways. Deloitte is an accounting, consulting, and tax services firm. No idea what she's talking about.

“I was recently in Shenzhen… talking to one of that country’s legendary businessmen. I asked him about the Iran war and his response surprised me. “For us, Trump’s attack on Iran is less consequential than his threat to attack Greenland,” he told me.” 1/9

In the United States, President Trump’s periodic insults hurled toward allies get treated as routine tantrums. But in those countries, the accumulation of abuse has reached a tipping point. My latest column: washingtonpost.com/opinions/2026/…

This could have been prevented but now it’s almost too late. Before the Iran war, I thought the relationship could be salvaged through new elections. Now, I think the best Israel can hope for is a cordial relationship with no aid.

Opinion: As boomers die off, America’s anti-Israeli tilt is likely to harden. Fewer and fewer Americans think of Israel as David standing up to the Arab world’s Goliath. More and more associate it with heavy-handed militarism. ft.trib.al/4ZwB8Pw

@SohrabAhmari @SohrabAhmari you described ~80% of commentators and writers today. They’re utterly useless and proof of our intellectual decadence. They’re defending a system that’s no longer defendable. Some still do great work because they’re not tied to a system.

Do we need Jonathan Chait as a writer? At what point does it become incumbent on us to admit that he’s describing — and offering prescriptions for — a world that simply doesn’t exist. It’s like if I, as a writer for car fans, devoted myself to the horse as a means of transport.

@SohrabAhmari Ironic that he is supportive of large economic champions though I would say the issue with Europe is that it is too sclerotic and regulatory- big law with big government. US has big law too, but there is some dynamism left (in some areas at least).

Why are the US and Chinese economies so much more resilient than Europe's? Michael Lind has a surprising answer: because American and China have corporate titans, while European regulators cut their giants down. Iconoclastic Lind as ever! unherd.com/2026/04/why-th…

@EvansRyan202 I have my doubts Tisza would be able to deliver on their promises, but Orban’s continued see-sawing over Europe and Russia is not helping end the conflict or deterring future attacks. He’s becoming a liability. We’ll see how it goes tomorrow.

"Magyar’s insurgent reformist Tisza party is promising to raise defense spending to NATO’s 5 percent of GDP target by 2035, invest in Hungary’s army, review defense industry contracts for corruption and carry out sweeping reforms aimed at rooting out Russian influence across government."
Rod Dreher@roddreher

Peter Magyar might oust Viktor Orban in tomorrow's election. Hope not, but if so, then Magyar -- who holds the same (v. popular) positions as Orban on migration & Ukraine -- will end by disappointing his EU/Western backers, or many of the voters who will have put him in office.

@GrayConnolly I used to believe this when my parents were battling each other in court. It took years for me to find my way back as I had to accept what happened. Guthrie is wrong but I get where she’s coming from.

@SohrabAhmari Where was Sorbo at this time? The city was about to default, crime was rampant, and the mob was king. It was called Fear city for a reason. That said, we had great movies come from this era.

Ironically, they make such a fuss about the western world yet they are keen on discarding the rest of “the west” if it means getting what they want. There are criticisms of Five Eyes that are understandable but lobbing against the rest is ridiculous.
