It's insane how a pilot program to give 500 families ~$35 dollars a day to buy food (saving the city millions compared to giving food directly) has been twisted into "10k to every illegal".

@jdcmedlock Unintended consequence of Proof of Payment: subjecting riders to listening to fare skippers making terrible lies about not paying to enforcement people. (okay, it's my personal gripe).

Fare evasion is bad (we shouldn't celebrate antisocial behavior that deprives public agencies of money), but also not worth cracking down on (bad ROI and creates hassles for riders). We should simply tear down the faregates and rely on proof of purchase

@swinshi @MattBruenig Scott, you and I have both attended many fancy conferences where lunch was provided. Yet everyone at the conference could easily have paid for their own lunch, except perhaps a few grad students. Why do conference organizers do this? Why do you accept socialist lunches?
