What a stupid idea - In the article it says as much as of a South Norfolk trial of PAYT: “At the time of the failed trial – which sparked a 250pc rise in fly-tipping………”. telegraph.co.uk/money/bills/co…

An article in the Telegraph highlighting the UK's massive litter problem, but it's short on solutions. Councils do need to buck up their cleaning routines, but we also need to realise that enforcement and litter fines are an essential part of the fix. telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/07/1…

@OffTheGroundOrg “It costs too much” is hardly an excuse for not carrying out legal duties. In Manchester operatives do (at least sometimes, cannot confirm if in every case) litter pick prior to cutting grass. So, if one council can do it why not another?

The fly in the ointment to the above is that unfortunately, many councils are still sending non-recyclable waste to landfill, rather than for incineration. Something that should have been outlawed by now.

Everyone should know that modern incineration with energy recovery is a very environmentally friendly way of disposing of waste, so don’t worry about throwing items of doubtful recyclability into the non-recycling bin. getpocket.com/explore/item/w… via @Pocket

This is a lay-by on the A444, a main road into Coventry, next to the football stadium. Here’s the lunacy… it’s the responsibility of ⁦@NBBCouncil⁩ to clean up! As you can see, they don’t do it.

Northern Litterhouse has long been of the opinion that removing fly-tipping, even on private land, should be a cost to Government and not to private citizens. Without this there is no incentive on the state to resolve the issues driving fly-tipping. dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1…

These underground communal 'super-bins' may work well in Europe, but in Europe they are emptied every day. Meanwhile in the UK, Councils empty communal bins infrequently resulting in them overflowing and rubbish being dumped around them. mol.im/a/11323201 via @MailOnline

Fly-tipping surges nearly 38pc in past decade? Well two reasons are: 1) the difficulty in disposing of waste due to council restrictions at tips and 2) artificially high costs due to landfill tax (essentially just another tax grab for the chancellor). msn.com/en-gb/money/ot…

This story highlights the critical need to have some means of sanctioning failing councils that are unwilling to deal with fly-tipping. The legislation is available to the council to fix this problem, but they clearly can't be bothered to use it. mylondon.news/news/south-lon…

It should be noted that many organisations involved with addressing the fly-tipping issues will benefit from any increase in funding as a result of “hyping up” the serious crime angle. This propensity to promote a narrative that provides more funding should not be overlooked.

Unfortunately, it also attempts to perpetuate the myth that large amounts of fly-tipping are the result of organised crime. Although clearly a problem in some cases most fly-tipping is small car and van loads from households and not from large scale organised criminal operations.

This report from the National Audit Office correctly identifies that costly landfill tax is a significant impediment to addressing the fly-tipping problem. (thread continued) a.msn.com/00/en-gb/AAWEs…
