Under strict supervision, a specialised team slowly started removing the centuries-old shendur from the idol—grain by grain, layer by layer. What looked like a simple orange surface soon revealed its true scale: by the end, they had cleared nearly 900 kilograms of vermilion, a weight so massive it had actually begun to threaten the idol’s own safety. The atmosphere inside the temple was electric. Every few hours, as another fragile layer came off, priests and conservators paused—checking for cracks, silently chanting, almost as if asking Ganpati’s permission to continue. No machines, no rush. Only brushes, soft tools, and enormous patience. It felt less like “cleaning” and more like archaeology of devotion—peeling back the physical history of countless aartis, festivals, and private mannat ke sindoor ke tilak. And then, the moment everyone had been waiting for actually arrived. When the final coat was lifted, a much smaller, pristine idol emerged—about two feet high, four-armed, trunk turned to the left, radiating a presence that eyewitnesses describe as completely different, almost childlike yet deeply powerful. For the first time in centuries, Pune saw Kasba Ganapati as he truly is, not as history had painted him on the outside. Many devotees broke down in tears; some said it felt like meeting an ancestor whose face you’d only ever seen in stories. Authorities have now decided that all future abhisheks and heavy offerings will be done on the Utsav Murti, while the original swayambhu idol will be preserved with utmost care under expert guidance. The “Ancient Awakening” of Kasba Ganapati has not only recharged the energy of the temple, it has also reminded an entire city that faith isn’t just about what we add over time—but also about what we dare to gently uncover.
