@EracuStudios I'd lean into doing what's best for your situation. If you can wait to build more interest you could do that or put it out and see what happens. I've not released a game yet but I think if I had a finished game I'd just sit it there and market it while working on my next.

Hi devs! My next game, Professional Chef, is launching with this many wishlists. Am I crazy, or are wishlists a bit overrated? #indiedev #gamedev #professionalchef

@UnityCodeMonkey Agree! It's about knowing your gaming audience and catering the advice to it. The generic one size fits all is not the right approach. I'd call it filtering content relevance to your genre.

#### ANSWER #### #### ANSWER #### #### ANSWER #### #### ANSWER #### #### ANSWER #### #### ANSWER #### #### ANSWER #### #### ANSWER #### #### ANSWER #### #### ANSWER #### #### ANSWER #### #### ANSWER #### (B) A lot of game dev advice sounds contradictory because people remove all the nuance. Advice that works for one genre, one platform, one budget, or one point in time might not work in a different situation. The important thing is not just asking "Is this advice true?" but asking "What is the context for this advice? And does it apply in my case?"

Why can two pieces of game dev advice seem contradictory but both still be correct? A) Because most game dev advice is completely useless B) Because the correct answer often depends on context, timing, platform, and the specific game C) Because only advice from successful developers matters D) Because every game should follow the exact same marketing strategy (answer in reply below)

@KenneyNL My approach is good game devs want to learn and support other devs. I think it's important to share and build community. But its easy to feel like some people are there to use you or steal you work. In a world of ravens and doves that can be a hard thing to deal with!

I've noticed that I've become a bit hesitant to show the games & tools I'm working on. I'm often afraid that they will be stolen (especially because of AI), or that a cheap copy will appear before I've been able to finish them. Does anyone else share this feeling?

@jogamedev This is a great point! Game dev feels like one of the greatest delayed gratification professions. For a long time you don't see results but stacking more and more eventually builds a train with a lot of speed!

Making a game is hard enough but marketing it at the same time is even harder... so I'm running an experiment: There's this concept called "Stacking". Its similar to multitasking except all of the different tasks are complementary - so doing them together is a benefit to all of them - whereas with multitasking you have to split your attention for multiple unrelated things... Well how does this relate to game marketing? A lot of common game marketing strategies are multitasking: you have to make content, devlogs, email media, etc. It can be very time consuming and unfortunately doesn't actually move the needle on producing the game. Soooooo I had a brilliant idea. The content creators that I'm most impressed with are the ones I fondly call "low effort" meaning they produce quality content but it's not over produced and doesn't take too long to make. This is important because it can be such a slog to spend weeks making a 15 min video and then have it die with low views... not worth it. So it occurred to me that I could make a channel dedicated to Let's Plays of my own games and games in the same niche - that may sound obvious but stick with me, there's a reason I think this is actually revolutionary. The audience targeting is perfect and they'll be easy to make. The only hard part is growth. Gaming is a highly saturated category and most channels struggle with breaking through but there's one thing that gives me some confidence that this might work. Being hyper niche. If I only play my own games / games in the same genre then the platform will be really clear about who to send my content to, and I'll improve over time, and I expect it to be a marathon, but lucky for me, the content is super easy and fun to make aaaaand it doubles as playtesting (this is where the Stacking comes in). So it's highly sustainable. A few years ago, I made 5 Let's Plays of my first game Spellmasons and they all performed poorly ("dying" at like 200 views), but the funny thing is, I checked back almost 2 years later and 3 of them have over 1k views with one almost to 3k. The video literally took me under an hour to make. So the realization hit me: what if I had kept at that. This <1hr of work got me 27 new subscribers. If even 10 of them bought the game that'd be $200. What a crazy return on 1 hr of work. So yeah, it's only 3k views but, again, its sustainable, helps me work on my own game design, fun, and easy. And the impact on game design via playtesting cannot be understated. The more time I've spent as a gamedev I realize you really have to put in tons of time playing your own game or else you won't have good judgement when it comes to knowing what needs improvement. So this is the experiment. I'm going to start producing gaming content of my own games. I'm going to commit to it for at least a month (but I plan on longer) and if I detect even marginal growth I think it could pay off big. How much better would it be to just make and play my own games rather than make them and try to squeeze in time for "content". I'd take the former 10 times out of 10. We'll see how this goes, but I'm super excited at the prospect.

My dev partner has not said anything yet. They've just seen the commit. They know. Anyway... Sanctuary of Small Things. Wishlist it on Steam. The UI is great now. Probably. Ask me Monday.

This is the third Inventory edit I've made for this game. I was supposed to be building the demo this weekend. I opened the project Saturday morning, looked at the inventory screen, and thought... that's not right. And then I didn't build the demo. I redesigned the whole thing.

Added multi language support to Sanctuary of Small Things! I used Google translate so I will need some native language playtesters to tell me if anything looks odd✌

It's been a big week of development - this week I had the overwhelming task of trying to improve the grass in the game. From the visual bending of grass as the player walks through to ensuring the logs could be seen when chopping a tree and appearing on top of the grass 😅

Each biome has a unique grass colour. I used Pinterest colour palettes to help inspire the different shades of grass. What one is your favourite? Sanctuary of Small Things is now available to wishlist on steam 🙏 #indiegames #gaming #steamgamss

Capyvarias reached 1k revenue!!! 😱🥳 I'm super happy and proud of my first game. It is kinda crazy that, even tho is not a huge number, it makes Capyvarias on the top 33%, what?!
