Life in the slow lane
If you see a healthcare worker in the NHS ask to take a photo of their ID not just their badge so you know who you’ve seen and their profession. No one should have a problem with this. It is good practice and transparency and part of good care. My mum has seen 3 people recently and I have no idea who they were or their profession or level of training.

An important meeting on Monday. Speaking to RCN delegates, nurses - including those in safe and longstanding advanced practice roles - also oppose doctor substitution. They want a workforce plan that values each profession for our skills, and that discusses the areas of overlap.
Strike Map@strike_map

Last night, we hosted our second RCN fringe with @NurseSayNO. The 22–23 strike wave may have eased, but the need for coordinated industrial and political strategy hasn’t. From @TheBMA to @unisontheunion disputes and potential nursing ballots, health workers must stand together.

NHS becoming an ungovernable mess. Squandered most precious asset: GP & associated infrastructure. Unique ‘honest broker’ gatekeeper function. What sets us aside from - for instance - USA system. Trend is shift everything towards hospitals with ED increasingly new front door.

The attempts of the @RCPhysicians to cling on to the vestiges of what they once supported is quite ...amazing The requirements to be... Certificate in Geriatric Medicine Knowledge-Based Assessment Lead includes being a PA for 7 years. I predict this is a degree anyone can do and be equated to specialist training in near future too. @GeriSoc - are you saying a Consultant of 3 years experience and a PA of 7 years experience are at par? Cos that's....something Link: bgs.org.uk/vacancy-certif…

@DigitalGerry @JatinderHayre_ @FT @Cartermill65675 It’s a bit of a hop, skip and a jump from a nurse doing an ECG and bloods to being the emergency physician in charge with no medical degree and no formal examinations in emergency medicine. Yet practising it. Which is what an ACP survey recently identified is happening.

The NHS workforce debate is built on a lie. Britain has one of the lowest doctor-to-patient ratios in the developed world; yet instead of mass expansion of doctors, the state chose a cheaper experiment: Physician Associate and ACP quackery. 1/3 ft.com/content/f7e019… via @ft

"96 shifts were filled by Advanced Care Practitioners in 12 months- cover for FY2 shifts" Riddle me this- educationists in healthcare If an ACP knowledge and education is at the level of an FY2 doctor? Why do you have medical school places -and simply not encourage other professions to become ACP? And if good enough for FY2- why not all other posts- including Consultant? Or was this just an attempt to tackle locums- and tempt other professions with a different payscale- given AfC rates are so poor? Half baked plans helps neither ACPs or Doctors. Why not define clearly requirements for rotas- rather than this nonsense which creates more divisive rhetoric. I repeat- we are led in the workforce sector by clowns. @DHSCgovuk @NHSEngland @NHSE_WTE

@marion_mcnaught @LittlePersonDoc @medicalmodelbri @gold103x In the UK MIdwives are essentially 'independent' with little Medical/Obstetric oversight. This is why the UK has so many Maternity scandals every couple of years. Similar will happen when NPs take over general practice - NHS will suppress patient harm data.

The nurses seem to be awfully quiet on this . Could ONE nurse explain HOW Adele is not a GP substitute ? She sees patients from start to finish, no GP input . Isn’t this modern day QUACKERY? #protectnurse #nurse #nursing #RCN26 #ACP #advancedpractice #maxinurse
@medicalmodelwithabriochebun@medicalmodelbri

@protectnurse @alisonleary1 @rcgp @doctor_katie @DrSteveTaylor @DrNeenaJha @dave_dlt what is the difference practically between what Adele is doing here and the role of a GP? Is this ‘ advanced nursing ‘ or practising medicine without a licence ?

@marion_mcnaught @medicalmodelbri @gold103x There are many excellent ANPs who don’t believe this and have no desire to be autonomous Dr replacements. There are those who believe otherwise and and you have a very valid point. I wonder how confident those ANPs would be when the buck truly stops with them?

@LittlePersonDoc @SaulStaniforth One substance abuse at a time; sort out MPs obvious daily problem with alcohol and then do Cocaine abuse in the HoC next time. By the way, either of those substances in any normal workplace would be gross misconduct and dismissal without appeal.

Adele Parsons VP of the ANP forum at @theRCN doesn’t want to remain silent on the issue of scope creep and claims that ANP represents a ‘distinct level of practice’ Why then , is she working as a GP substitute? ( see video below ⬇️) youtu.be/ZWm5irt2HMQ?si…

@AliJaneMoore @benn_elisbenn This is replicated in trusts across the country and nobody cares. Little things matter though. It’s part of why more and more drs are choosing to leave the NHS.
