A startup founder who I respect used a term that I hadn't heard before: "emotional runway". Often, founders (myself included) obsess over financial runway without thinking about how much emotional runway we have left. I'm convinced that both types of runway are equally critical.

Your employees can always find a higher paying job somewhere else. If the only thing you have to keep someone is money then you need to build your revenue model to support it. Otherwise, you're better off investing those dollars to create a more interesting place to work.

I don’t understand how M-F my daughter can sleep through almost anything and I have to drag her out of bed at 7:15 to get ready for school, but on weekends she’s awake at 6:15, too alert to sleep or even rest quietly.
