A Nigerian lady employed as a specialist dietitian on Band 6 NHS pay grade in Manchester, Ifenyinwa Chizube, has been banned from practising in the UK for not knowing basic human anatomy and the essentials of her role. During my lectures in Nigeria, many of my students (if they're reading) would recall that I often told them that medical or health professions are like "handiwork", 'Olu Aka'. I told them to look beyond their study days or passing by all means, and beyond Nigeria, and focus on acquiring the knowledge and skills which they would need should they be called upon in the real world to practise their profession. Despite passing the interview for a Band 6 job, it turned out that at the Manchester Royal Infirmary Hospital, where Ifeyinwa worked, she did not know where the intestines were located in the abdomen, as per report from an investigative panel. She said the colon (rather than the duodenum) came immediately after the stomach. They then asked her the function of the gall bladder and she said it was for storing urine. These came after she failed to grasp basic concepts in GI dietetics, such as epigastric intubation or common symptoms of IBS, for example. When asked about the experiences she listed she had in Nigeria, she said those concepts and pratices were not applied in dietetics practice in Nigeria. Rather than take accountability for her lack of basic knowledge and experience, she wanted to paint a whole country bad. The important lesson for anyone still studying and has high ambitions for practising at the highest levels, and beyond Nigeria, is to pay attention and learn the skills and stuff in your field. Forget the big titles of your profession or passing by any means. If you manage to get yourself in a job where you have some knowledge gap, go learn the stuff. You may pass by in Nigeria, but abroad, you must prove your stuff; that's why you're being paid. Universities in Nigeria training medical and health professionals must understand that they must set standards for graduating because your students carry your name everywhere they go. Lecturers that sell marks for money or naked body are also damaging the students' future. Unfortunately, wherever she got her dietetics degree in Nigeria has now been demarketed, if a Nigerian diatetics degree has not been demoted entirely.

John Ebo, the £85,000 HR boss of Leeds city council, has emailed employees offering counselling in a “safe space” to deal with any stress employees suffer due Nigel Farage visiting the city next week. Ebo said in his mail; “No doubt you will have picked up in the news that Nigel Farage and Reform are holding an event/rally. “ I am mindful such events on colleagues and would ask that we enable safe conversations for colleagues such as Wellbeing network chats.” In turn the email was forwarded to the council’s Race Equality Staff Network who then added; “Be vigilant if you are in the city that day.” Perhaps Mr Ebo should detail to his council taxpayers what he does all day for his money as it’s clear from that email there’s not much going on either between his ears or in his department. The man’s a bloody fool.
