Colonialism (short ~70 years) built cities, rails, ports, schools, hospitals and cut mortality—life expectancy and GDP/capita rose sharply per Maddison data.
Post-1960 independence, many countries stagnated or regressed under bad governance, corruption, socialism and coups. Successes like Botswana prove institutions matter far more than colonial history.
