As a nurse, Alex Pretti worked helping treat veterans. He was shot dead by ICE while recording their activities with his phone. Had he gone there to kill them, he would have taken position and begun to shoot. But this is what happens when brains are damaged by propaganda. We condemn the dead who die documenting insanity and helping a woman who had just been assaulted by ICE. We fail to understand that we—or our loved ones—could be next. Right now, he cared about veterans injured in combat and immigrants who recently arrived, whether they fled Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, or elsewhere. Tomorrow, it could be an issue you care about. It may not be immigration—it could be something else, or your kids. When people are shot dead, the president will tweet and label you or your kids domestic terrorists. The problem is the human brain does not often see the full ramifications of events. We don’t see how this could be us tomorrow. So we mock the man who was treating veterans. We say he deserved to die. We say he brought it upon himself. But tomorrow, it could be you or your kids. The gods have a way of punishing those who fly with their heads too high—those who claim they are perfect and know how to carry themselves.
