@DrJoGrady I met him in Houses of Parliament at an event where scientific societies met MPs. Bumped into him on the terraces, I introduced myself, (fan girl), he said oh u r from the Boots uni. I looked puzzled. He laughed & said, come lunch with me. The most memorable lunch of my life.🤗

Side anecdotes from the day.
He made us a cup of tea during our chat. When he popped the kettle on, opened the cupboard, hesitated for a split second, tossed aside the pg tips on the lower shelf, and got the good stuff (Yorkshire tea) from the upper shelf 👌 🥰
When I was leaving he bid me farewell with a warm hug, a kiss on each cheek (which felt very continental to me at the time 😂 ) and recommend somewhere local for pizza, which if you’ve read his diaries, amused me no end!
RIP Tony, off to hunt out a triple cheese in your honour. 🍕

Twelve years ago today, we lost Tony Benn.
Tony was an inspiration. Unwavering in his commitment to peace, democracy, and socialist values.
He was also incredibly generous with his time, giving me a morning in house in 2010, to interview him for my PhD.
You are missed, Tony💘

What happened in Beirut today was pure evil (and I usually refrain from using words with religious connotations). Western media won’t pick up on it, of course. Israeli leaflets basically explicitly threatened the Lebanese: if you don’t go down into the streets and mount an insurrection and disarm Hizbullah with your own hands, we shall inflict a genocide on you just like the one we inflicted on Gaza (in the flyer they called the genocide a “stunning success”).

@Penny_Gowland @UoNUCU This cleaning thing is bizarre! Beyond being asked to clean our office space (emptying waste bins to where 🤔) as an addition to our job profile, why should we endanger further the livelihoods of our cleaners who have already faced job cuts (1 out of 3 gone I am told).

@UoNUCU No one seems to be pointing out that we have an extremely high workload. Teaching, research (which is litterallyan endless), admin, secretarial and financial support and now cleaning. We do everything.

To not understand how damaging it is to people’s morale, and actually their progression in their chosen field. Academics tend to self regulate anyway when to go for promo, re: is my work good enough. Especially women and folks with “protected characteristics”. 🥲.Desperately sad.

There's not much a UK Vice Chancellor could say that could shock me. This did it. Just the casualness of acknowledging they have deliberately destroyed an entire work culture that operated successfully for decades or centuries in just fifteen years.
