They can want Murphy long-term and still decline the option. The option forces them to guarantee roughly $14.5M for 2027 before they know whether his late progression is real. Drafting Cashius Howell gives them insulation. If Murphy does not produce, they already have another young edge in the building. If Murphy does produce, they were always willing to pay him, but they get to negotiate after the proof year instead of locking themselves into the fifth-year option now.

@Ryan_D2TF @BengalsBrews I doubt they would do it before the season. If they wanted it done now, they'd have picked up the option. The smart move is to wait until after the season and sign him before he becomes a free agent when the new league year starts.

@BengalsKorey Have to disagree. Those guys are working their program, one that's worked for them. I get the everyone in the building thought, but I want 9, 1, and 5 to continue to produce at the level they have, and optics don't do that.

@MrKCincy They like UDFAs and I'm sure you'll get a couple that are signed but don't make it. In this scenario, you don't need anyone other than Flacco for 26. Even having a capable backup QB has never been a priority for the FO until Flacco. This is "win this year" mode.
