First thing to introduce, then: Vols 1-3 of Guthrie's great History of Greek Philosophy. This first half tells the story from the Presocratics down to the 5th-century Enlightenment. Each vol in h/b costs a pretty sum, and vol 1 is a 1st edition! Needs someone to love them afresh.

Endnotes are often signalled by little numbers in the text, but I find these distracting. What do you think? In The Genetic Book of the Dead, I pioneered a different system. Each endnote has a key phrase, the phrase which would, under the old system, have borne the little number. It also has the page number on which the phrase occurs. Do you prefer the little numbers? A refinement , which I propose for my next book, is the quarter of the page where the phrase occurs.

@mike_matas I assume the ease transitions are shown here in 0.1x slo-mo. Otherwise any racing driver or fighter pilot (or even gamer) would be aghast at such meaningless, ornamental and disrespectful delays in a HMI.

@GuyInFlight @LUDENClassics I remember it differently, that the pesky engineers had intentionally taken design decisions that made a V installation hard because they feared management demanding it take the Rover V8.

@LUDENClassics Those familiar with Jaguar history will remember the story behind our XJ40 in the mid 80s, when some of the savvy engineers made sure that, despite management decrees, the car would ultimately take a V12 (although it didn't happen till over a few years after the original launch)

@alex_usyd I very much enjoyed @EdwardWilsonLee’s book on Pico, published earlier this year. There’s a good review of it (and Copenhaver’s new translation of the 900 theses) in the LRB lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v47/…

Anyone know this guy? Pico della Mirandola, 15th-century noble and linguistic prodigy, tried to host an all-expenses-paid global debate in Rome to show that ideas across traditions could harmonize. There are worse projects to revive in 2025.

Started this bio of Plato this morning. In the intro, Waterfield says that we have the complete works of Plato and “not a single word that he published has been lost.” That’s incredible!
