@florida_grand They don’t really create that many jobs and certainly it won’t be locals. It’ll be transplants. If this is such a great wonderful thing, then it should be done without any tax breaks

UPDATE on the proposed data center in Fort Meade, Polk County, Florida, population 5,100: — Florida Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly, wrote a letter to Fort Meade Mayor Jaret Williams, raising red flags about the $2.6B Fort Meade data center plan I have included screenshots of portions of the letter. — Basically, Kelly said that if the more than 4,000,000-square-foot facility is ultimately constructed, it will present significant risks to central Florida's energy capacity, water resources and transportation infrastructure. — The data center would be located on a 1,300-acre former phosphate mine. (I included a screenshot of the location) The developer, Florida Ecopark LLC, says the facility would use 50,000 gallons of water per day and could create nearly 500 jobs by 2031. (Just for context, major phosphate operations often pull 30–34 million gallons of water from the aquifer daily.) — "We are 100% in support of positive growth and opportunities for the city, but we want to make sure we're set up for success and not approved too early to where we have false hope and no jobs for the citizens in the town," George McNerney, the vice chair of Watchdogs of Fort Meade, said. — One of the city commissioners, Candice Lott, told FOX 13 that “concerns raised by the commerce secretary will need to be addressed before any development can occur.” (I included screenshots of her statement.) — The developer still needs to acquire a number of permits from various agencies, including the Southwest Florida Water Management District, before the project can move forward.

@Lost_In_Jax @j_fishback @ByronDonalds Well, that’s not true. Contrary to popular believe. Data centers can actually help lower the cost of electric by purchasing more power IF that city has more than it needs. Higher paying jobs, averaging 20% more than the average for a rural town or city.

@j_fishback @ByronDonalds @j_fishback Love your policies, but most data centers are closed looped systems, like chillers, or industrial A/C, and for the ones that use water, 500,000 gallons is not true, more like a close loop of maybe 20 or 30k. I'd be happy to have a good convo about it.

BREAKING: Fort Meade commissioners unanimously approved a developer agreement for a massive data center project despite opposition from residents. It would be Florida’s first hyperscale data center and would generate 500 jobs. Here are key points to it: •Tax Revenue: Over a 10-year incentive period, the project brings in approximately $1.6 million annually, while the Polk County School Board could receive over $13 million annually. •Economic Impact: The facility promises to create 500+ jobs by 2031, with 50+ high-wage positions (averaging over $100,000 per year). •Total Investment: The AI "hyperscale" facility involves a $2.6-$2.8 billion investment over 1,300+ acres. The project includes incentives: The Polk Commission approved $140 million in tax breaks for the project over 10 years. Bottom line: As much as Floridians want to stop data centers, counties and cities will be hard pressed not to accept them considering how much money they will generate for the respective city/county, not to mention the jobs created. Additionally, if Florida doesn’t accept them, the state runs the risk of losing the billions of dollars to other states; that would be a tough pill to swallow, especially when Floridians are adamant about eliminating property taxes.

Why should anyone be forced to pay property taxes. The state doesn’t buy the house you did. You bought the home, improved it, put a mortgage on it and paid for it. The state collects sales taxes & business taxes to fund services. Imagine the 70 year old who owns a home today valued at $2M - they bought 30 years ago for $50,000, maintained the house for 30 years and finally paid the house off - Why should they or their heirs pay any tax much less on the increased value? They will say, “who’s going to support the roads, police, fire department and schools? Sales tax & local businesses can support those things. For those who support property taxes understand you open the door for the state to collect taxes on ALL property; boats, cars, clothes, art, bicycles, gym equipment, grills, tools, silverware, jet skis, stocks, retirement accounts - everything. 27 states reassess annually, and the rest, do so every 3 years OR lie California, any time you improve the property! It’s brutal and it’s endless! If you support property taxes on personal property you are either; a) a communist b) confused c) academic d) free loader End Property Taxes!

44 Democrats just killed a resolution condemning AIPAC. No roll call. No names. No record. They made sure of it. 80% of Democratic voters hold unfavorable views of Israel. 80%. The party’s own base — by an overwhelming supermajority — wants accountability. These 44 members just told them no. Not in public. Not on the record. In a room in New Orleans where nobody had to put their name on anything. The sponsor called it “an embarrassing display of cowardice.” She’s right. And while they were hiding behind parliamentary procedure, Politico was reporting that two potential 2028 Democratic presidential candidates personally called DNC members to kill the resolution before the vote. They don’t want their names on protecting AIPAC. So they made sure nobody’s name would be on anything. This is what donor capture looks like from the inside. 80% of your voters say one thing. Your donors make two phone calls. The donors win. Every single time.
