Career idea: write these papers and collect citations 🔥“Why median splits are amazing” 🔥”The benefits of treating ordinal variables as Gaussian” 🔥”Nearly significant? An important concept” 🔥”The immense epistemic fertility of not sharing code”
Daniel P. Moriarity@dp_moriarity

If I had $10 for every time I found a citation used to rationalize the stratification of a continuous variable, that doesn't actually support said stratification, I could afford a Nature APC for this review.

There are many claims for the oldest pub in Britain. The most famous is the Trip to Jerusalem at Nottingham: reputedly opened 1189, but this was invented in 1909 by the landlord. In reality its a 17thC building that was used as a pub by 1751. So which is the oldest? ...a thread🧵

So suppose I were thinking of leaving academia. Would anyone be interested in hiring me? DM and let's chat. I haven't made up my mind, but just trying to assess the landscape, eventually find someplace where I can make a difference

The hard copy has arrived! It looks lovely (@OpenBookPublish found a great image for the cover) and, once you’ve finished reading, you can use it as a doorstop 😂

Plan to quote this in an upcoming paper. I think it elegantly showcases issues around biological reductionism, the levels problem (Eronen), and hierarchies of organizations (Wimsatt).

“Culture War Whack-aMole” sounds familiar: “Every time an egregiously distorted or dishonest publication on colonial history appears from a right wing culture warrior determined to re-legitimate Empire, I've tried to wallop it w/ historical integrity. Immediately up pops another”
Alan Lester@aljhlester

I've spent a lot of time since the BLM protests of June 2020 playing "Culture War Whack-aMole". Every time an egregiously distorted, selective, or downright dishonest publication on colonial history appears from a right wing culture warrior determined to re-legitimate Empire, I've tried to wallop it with some historical integrity. Immediately, up pops another historical negation, from a right wing politician, an obscurely funded 'think tank', a member of History Reclaimed in the right-wing press or an astroturf organisation. I've been contacted by quite a few people working in the fields where these 'moles' pop up - education, heritage, the performing arts etc. - who've said they value the kind of historically-literate responses I've had time to develop after spending 30-odd years specialising in colonial history. So here is a recap of my free, online blogs, for anyone who feels they might be useful. Some are now outdated but might still have useful info: The Common Sense Group of Tory MPs: blogs.sussex.ac.uk/snapshotsofemp… Restore Trust: blogs.sussex.ac.uk/snapshotsofemp… History Reclaimed: blogs.sussex.ac.uk/snapshotsofemp… Policy Exchange and its defence of Winston Churchill’s iconographic status: alanlester.co.uk/blog/winston-c… The Institute of Economic Research and its backing of Kemi Badenoch: Short: bellacaledonia.org.uk/2024/06/05/coo… Long: blogs.sussex.ac.uk/snapshotsofemp… Nigel Biggar’s Colonialism: A Moral Reckoning: Short: bellacaledonia.org.uk/2023/03/07/the… Long: tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10… Nigel Biggar and the Spectator: alanlester.co.uk/blog/the-right… If you want to read a collective of other specialist historians' responses to all this, please see this book, out on 27th June: hurstpublishers.com/book/the-truth…

There are entire fields in psychology doing research with measures that were never properly validated. Time for an “expression of concern” for a few thousand papers?

If any kid is hurt tonight, responsibility will fall on the mayor and univ presidents. Other leaders and schools have found a safe, de-escalatory path. This is the opposite of leadership and endangers public safety. A nightmare in the making. I urge the Mayor to reverse course.

NEW - @NYCMayor says Columbia protest has been "co-opted" and is going to share their intel, he says at 1 Police Plaza. He advises students involved in the protest to leave the area and tells parents to tell their kids to leave "before the situation escalates."

AOC: Oil and gas already enjoy an obscene wealth of tax giveaways in this country. But we’re supposed to believe if we let them drill just a little bit more, that they will finally lower their prices. This is all trickle down nonsense

Progress on making my blog boring vanilla html. If you've not read any of this, I suggest the Regression Fire and Dangerous Things three-part series. It's like a super-condensed version of my book/course, a neutron star of Bayesian causal inference. elevanth.org

Really enjoyed this article on uniquely human cognition -> thank you to @CantlonLab & Piantadosi for articulating so eloquently an idea that makes a tonne of sense to me: there are no domain-specific silver bullets when it comes to human cognition. nature.com/articles/s4415…
