A tale of 2 rivers. One is a designated SSSI full of soil and the other is an urban trout river with bankside trees full of wet wipes and sanitary waste. 🤮 #riverteme #worcester #riverchelt #cheltenham Things have got to change! This is no way to treat our precious rivers!

The gorgeous Camembert graduated to an outside hutch this morning now that she is a few days clear of treatment 🙌 A few days acclimatising and she will be ready for release 🦔🐾

I wrote about the Somerset Levels, once England's most precious wetland landscape, our Camargue or Danube Delta, known as the Avalon Marshes, the birthplace of England. This once amazing watery landscape has been engineered, drained and desecrated beyond recognition and at vast expense to taxpayers, for little or no gain. Now though, at long last, change is in the air. bengoldsmith.substack.com/p/reimagining-…

@MerryAlbright @Blacky_Himself Make contact with EA West Mids and WUF. Both have advisors and can offer funding or delivery of any work. Wild Trout Trust could also offer advice and be a delivery partner.

Southall Brook is small but has been ‘controlled’ so to not disturb farming. It’s v vulnerable to pollution (agri, septic tank & road 🤦🏻‍♀️) & flood risk. Theres huge potential to be ‘wilder’ & cleaner & biodiverse. I’m willing but where do I start @Blacky_Himself ??

From the scatter spawning of the roach to the epic journey of the eel, fish reproduction is as varied as it is fascinating 🐟 We were recently treated to a talk on the topic by Professor Mark Everard - a celebrated author and researcher. Catch up here: youtu.be/U12zDMh8e3E

Looks like the rainfall affecting the Monnow catchment last Friday was an exceptional event. 100mm (Vowchurch) & 115mm (Trafalog) in 24 hours has a return period of 1 in 200-500 years for this area. Considerably more extreme than the flood events of 2019 & 2020.

This is the riverbed of the River Dore in Herefordshire today. What a drought. There were still crayfish under the rocks. Eerie scene.

@NicolaCutcher EA Fisheries have already undertaken a fish rescue in the River Dore above, in and below Peterchurch. The fish were released downstream in flowing water.

“How can Britain possibly be running out of water?” We’re running out of water for the very same reason that we get so many floods: we’ve engineered and drained our landscapes to expel water as quickly as possible; natural sponges are now fire hoses. theguardian.com/news/ng-intera…

For the first time in 400 years it appears that we have a beaver on the River Monnow. Signs have been there through the summer. ⁦@gow_derek⁩ ⁦@WUFoundation
