England is now the only country in Europe that doesn't financially support its farmers to produce food. Surely Trump's conflict in the Middle East and Putin's invasion of Ukraine show how utterly vital our food security is? The Government needs to wake up and back our farmers.

The devil is in the detail of Emma Reynolds’s latest farming proposals. Capping payments might sound fair on paper, but it ignores a basic truth: larger farms often deliver the biggest environmental gains. They manage the most land, plant the most trees, restore the most hedgerows, invest in the most soil improvement and habitat creation. If government environmental targets are serious, scale matters. Instead, these changes risk penalising the very businesses that have invested heavily in stewardship schemes over decades. The good work already done, the wildlife corridors, the regenerative practices, the carbon-cutting investments will be harder to sustain if the numbers no longer stack up. Environmental ambition cannot be achieved on goodwill alone. If larger farms are forced to scale back because support no longer reflects reality, we won’t just lose income we’ll lose momentum. @DaleVince All the chemicals, pesticides, nutrients and diseases that flow from them are horrid. It's a well known scandal.

We need to get real about sewage from animal farming - cow poo for example. With nearly 10 million cows in Britain, each weighing ten times as much as a typical human and eating 50% more per kg of body weight - we have the equivalent of 150m extra people and their sewage to deal with. Our human sewage system is at breaking point, polluting our rivers and seas - but unseen and un dealt with there’s the equivalent of another 150m of us taking daily dumps in the countryside and no system to deal with it or even take account of it. The usual bleating about adding costs and making business un economic won’t wash - dirty businesses need to clean up, we’re living in a Cows toilet right now. thetimes.com/uk/environment…
