What US city has the largest gap between national perception and reality?
My answer: Detroit
Everyone seems to think it’s a run down hell hole w nothing but boarded up buildings.
In reality:
> Completely rejuvenated downtown w businesses, residential, restaurants, & nice sports venues – Ford Field (Lions), Comerica Park (Tigers), Little Caesars Arena (Pistons & Red Wings)
> One of the best airports in the country – Delta hub w direct flights all over the world
> Tons of history, culture, and classic architecture
> Diversifying economy beyond auto into tech, medical, etc.
> People are genuinely nice but also super tough & resilient
Of course it’s not all unicorns and rainbows. While some parts of the city are making a comeback, others are being left behind.
There’s crime, traffic and all the other things most big cities battle.
But if Detroit has a national reputation of 1/10, in actuality I think it’s more like 7/10.

@cityaestheticss This kind of beautiful architecture was built when individual entrepreneurs had influence, before short-sighted planning took control of our cities. Later, many downtowns were replaced with parking lots and only a few scattered buildings.

@elonmusk I agree with you. I call myself a blind optimist because I choose to see the good in people.

Not every corporate job is a prison. If yours feels like one, it may be time to change workplaces, not assume the entire system is broken. Every job requires creating value, whether it’s corporate or small business. That doesn’t mean you’re being exploited. Let’s criticize bad cultures without villainizing all work.

@SteveOnSpeed Maslow got this right. If basic needs aren’t met, loving your job won’t make you happy. Motivation speeches don’t replace fair pay and stability. Take care of people’s needs first then talk about passion and purpose.

Never be sorry in the corporate job for…
1. Attending to personal medical emergencies
2. Seeking clarity on your role, responsibilities
3. Asking for leave or personal time off
4. Pursuing opportunities for growth
5. Prioritizing family commitments
6. Speaking up about workload
7. Advocating for fair treatment
8. Taking breaks during work
9. Not being available 24/7
10. Being yourself
Remember: Your worth is not defined by your job, but by your courage to prioritize your well-being and authenticity.
Stand firm and thrive unapologetically.

@berkie1 Walkable access like this fuels local economies and helps communities grow and prosper. Sadly, in much of the U.S., small businesses are being pushed out by corporate chains, which weakens neighborhoods, hurts the middle class, and makes today’s affordability crisis even worse.

Chicago’s Middle Class Is Disappearing: “The middle class is declining because the top 10% is swelling” in the city, says demographer Rob Paral, “& the bottom 20% is swelling. In a place like North Center, the median income is going through the roof” chicagomag.com/city-life/chic…

The City of Holland Michigan rarely ever plow or salt their roads or sidewalks in the downtown district. Yes, you read that right.
Holland has installed a unique snowmelt system which circulates 4,700 gallons of water per minute at a heated temperature of 95°F through a network of underground tubes that would span a whopping 190 miles in total length if all tubes were to be connected into 1 straight line.
This underground system can handle up to 1” per hour snowfall rates at an air temperature as low as 20°F.
The system is responsible for keeping nearly 700,000 square feet of roads & sidewalks within Holland clear of snow and ice. This means that plowing & salting are rarely ever needed from the City of Holland.
