i still don’t understand why every restaurant in italy has cous cous on the menu when they clearly don’t know how to make it. this is like asking an asian uncle to make you an authentic pizza margherita.

Questo costringe ogni leader a mobilitare la propria comunità contro le altre per sopravvivere politicamente. Chi prova a costruire un'identità nazionale trasversale viene isolato o assassinato. Chi cavalca l'odio settario prospera. Il sistema premia i peggiori. Il secondo meccanismo è l'uso strumentale della causa palestinese. Nasser in Egitto, Hafez al-Assad in Siria, Saddam Hussein in Iraq, Gheddafi in Libia: per decenni i regimi arabi hanno usato il conflitto con Israele come specchio deformante in cui riflettere i propri fallimenti interni. "Guardate il nemico là fuori" mentre a casa si torturava, si rubava, si reprimeva. La Palestina è diventata, tragicamente, il più grande alibi della storia araba contemporanea. Il terzo meccanismo è la vendetta come unico linguaggio politico. Senza istituzioni forti, senza stato di diritto, senza una cultura della giustizia separata dalla ritorsione, ogni violenza subita diventa un mandato morale per la violenza successiva. Non è irrazionale ogni attore risponde razionalmente agli incentivi che ha. Ma il sistema nel suo insieme produce catastrofe sistematica. Le armi fornite da USA, URSS, Iran, Arabia Saudita, Turchia non creano i conflitti: li amplificano. Il combustibile è locale e brucia da decenni. Il quarto meccanismo è la memoria usata come arma. La storia non viene studiata per capire, ma estratta selettivamente per giustificare la prossima strage. Ogni massacro diventa il titolo del capitolo successivo, non la lezione del capitolo precedente. Karantina e Damour, gennaio 1976, sono forse l'illustrazione più perfetta e più spietata di tutti questi meccanismi messi insieme. Beirut negli anni Sessanta era chiamata la Parigi del Medio Oriente. I suoi café sul lungomare, le sue università, la sua stampa libera per quanto fragile la rendevano un'anomalia affascinante nel panorama regionale. Ma quella bellezza poggiava su fondamenta marce. Il paese era governato da un Patto Nazionale non scritto del 1943: il presidente sarebbe sempre stato un cristiano maronita, il primo ministro un sunnita, il presidente del parlamento uno sciita. Una spartizione confessionale che aveva congelato la demografia del 1932 favorevole ai cristiani e che ogni anno che passava diventava più insostenibile, man mano che le comunità musulmane crescevano numericamente e si impoverivano nelle periferie delle città. Poi arrivò l'OLP. Con gli Accordi del Cairo del 1969, il governo libanese debole, diviso, ricattabile cedette all'organizzazione di Yasser Arafat il diritto di operare militarmente dal suolo libanese. In pochi anni, l'OLP aveva costruito uno Stato dentro lo Stato: la Fatahland nel Sud, ma anche enclavi armate a Beirut Ovest, con tribunali propri, carceri proprie, tasse proprie. Decine di migliaia di palestinesi, già espulsi dalla Giordania nel Settembre Nero del 1970, si riversarono in Libano portando con sé uomini armati, rancori e disperazione. #gaza #lebanon #israel #palesine
