@BowTiedKong I don’t know if it was fake but pretty sure we didn’t get the real story about how we didn’t go back. We indeed should care because it looks like we might not suck at this like we sort of did for the last 50ish years since we did it with calculators and pencil and paper….

@SojuConnoisseur @thTexasTeacher @clharrington024 As the Texas teacher said you are going to always have some slip through. But if you ACTUALLY put the kid in ISS and send a note home with notice that X amount of ISS will lead to alternative school you would be surprised how parents would do something if they knew consequences

@Luciferous_22 @thTexasTeacher @clharrington024 Yes but how are you going to get the parents to police their kid? I'm telling you, direct experience as a social worker. The biggest problem at the lowest levels is that parents REFUSE to even monitor their children, let alone hold them accountable.

@OurOldDad @eduleadership @GovSherrillNJ We aren’t saying take the computer lab out what we are saying is teach the kids how to type on computers when age appropriate AFTER they learn how to read and write! Not having 8 year olds bringing home a Chromebook every night!

@Luciferous_22 @eduleadership @GovSherrillNJ Well, I respectfully disagree. Each generation learns different skill as technology has changed. They aren't dumber, it's just the older generation don't get why certain skills have become outdated.

@n0n0tagain @eduleadership @GovSherrillNJ No - it’s not too late. It’s going to be very easy to get them out of K-8 schools in America. We just got the phones out. Everyone can see how this is harmful to all educational goals of this age group. We have the data because this crap records how bad it is!

@agentw240 @jencf13 @SketchesbyBoze Yeah. Parenting matters. Also just realizing paradigms change. From the 60s-05 college was a great deal. Devaluing the dollar and unlimited government backstop of college debt lead to soaring financial costs. Plus AI/Video have made access to learning very cost effective.

@n0n0tagain @eduleadership @GovSherrillNJ Right. 80% of lessons for 6 year olds should not have digital content. In fact, six year olds should see books, whiteboards and using pencils and paper and real books 100% of the time.

@Luciferous_22 @eduleadership @GovSherrillNJ Most teachers, in the UK at least, do want them. We use them everyday. About 80% of lessons have digital content. Our board is electronic. I talk to parents through email. I'm not going back to total paper and pen...it's a retrograde step.

@ClemSkelton @ZacharyDonnini Actually Christian’s or just pretending to be? I bet you couldn’t name 3 that have a legit shot at a presidential primary.

@ebennett74 The fact we don’t have “home economics” really is a massive failure of our schools.

Wait, what? Why aren’t they doing this at home already? What kind of parents don’t have their kids doing laundry at home, cleaning, etc? Why do you need a camp to teach kids things parents should be teaching at home anyway? Or, is this like “home ec” like I had in middle-school?
Lenore Skenazy@FreeRangeKids

A Chicago mom started a "REAL WORLD" summer camp: Kids go to grocery, laundry, even a cemetery. And they find their way via public transit. THE KIDS LOVE IT! The parents are GRATEFUL! The clothes are CLEAN! letgrow.org/real-world-sum…

@SojuConnoisseur @clharrington024 She’s talking about the kids who actually come to school. The fact violent or consistently disruptive kids stay with the general student body You’re referring to a eparate issue.

I agree with you. Understand that first. But I don't think the average American understands how hollowed-out some of our cities are. In Buffalo, NY, they categorize most statistics at the county level (to include the suburbs doing okay like Amherst, East Aurora, Elma, Orchard Park, even Cheektowaga and Tonawanda) But the city center, where most of the issues are? We're probably approaching 40-45% illiteracy (most of which below level 1 - unable to identify more than single words or numbers). 40-50% of the population of Buffalo is totally dependent on welfare programs (and are fundamentally unemployable). We totally missed the boat to get in front of these issues with interventions like you suggested. Hell, more than 60% of students (and approaching or exceeding 70% of high schoolers) just never went back to school after COVID. The solution is necessarily going to have to be more comprehensive. The first step is admitting the scope of the task instead of trying to find a rug to sweep it under. 22 months in social work was bad for my soul, but I saw a lot. Too much, perhaps.
