I’ve been incredibly grateful to start receiving pre-release reviews of my forthcoming book Women of the Middle Ages, and I wanted to share a few early reactions before its release on the 30th January. Readers have highlighted exactly what I hoped the book would do: uncover women we rarely hear about, and show how their lives, work, faith, and freedoms shifted across the medieval period in response to culture, politics, and the Church. “A really interesting read about so many women I had never heard about… a rich source of information for anyone interested in women’s history.” — Isabel Sipman “I learned a great deal about women’s roles across different time periods, and how tradition, culture and politics moulded their jobs, duties and freedoms.” — Judith Worthington “A fascinating trip through the Middle Ages… saints, nuns, workers, midwives. Accessibly written, engaging, and full of hidden histories.” — Victoria Huhn If you’re interested in medieval history, women’s history, or the stories that rarely make it into survey textbooks, this book is for you. It feels like the world can be a little heavy at the moment, so I’m trying, in my own small way, to add a bit of light back where I can. I’m excited to share that I’ll be taking on the Lake District Mighty Hike, a 26-mile full marathon-length hike on 6th June 2026 to raise vital funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. With every step I take and every mile I walk, I hope to help Macmillan continue providing essential support, care, and compassion to people living with cancer across the UK. I’d be incredibly grateful if you could: 👉 Support my challenge by visiting my fundraising page: …ghtyhikesfundraising.macmillan.org.uk/fundraising/Lu… 👉 Share this post to help spread the word 👉 Or simply send a bit of encouragement, as it all makes a difference! Whether it’s £2 or £20, every donation helps people access the care they need when it matters most. 💚 Thank you in advance for your support. This hike won’t be easy, but it’ll be absolutely worth it. Let’s make a Mighty difference together! #Macmillan #CharityChallenge #MightyHikes #Fundraising #CancerSupport

I was BLOWN AWAY to learn in episode 24 of the podcast with @LukeDaly99 that churches were going in debt (to Italian merchants) and running up these insane, unsustainable financial situations BUT STILL eating twelve course meals and carrying on as if nothing was wrong... until it was too late! Just like modern states are doing with their debts today! You can find the links to the episode in the HIGHLIGHTS tab on my profile if you want to listen.

You should study history because human psychology hasn’t changed in the past five thousand years, and the two methods of understanding it today are experiments done on bored college students for class credit or the entire collected record of everything that’s ever happened.

Must remember in the middle ages, particularly 13th century we arent talking millions - annual income of Canterbury was around £2000. Often these merchants would loan anywhere from £100 to £400. If they werent repaid then interest was added. If it got too great then merchants often had the backing of the papacy or king. Dont pay = excommunication. It almost happened to Archbishop Pecham in the late 13th century but he was able to gather funds funds.

@MemoryMedieval @LukeDaly99 How could the merchants collect against the Church? Isn’t this a “you owe me a thousand dollars, it’s your problem, you owe me a million dollars, it’s my problem,” situation?

@victorshannock Hi Victor, sadly not in the same form. This year is the first year they were back but I believe running on a smaller operation. Hopefully in the future it will be back as it was as it is really great

An incredible bonfire night at Corpusty and Saxthorpe in Norfolk. A very pagan display as torch bearers processed through the village with the effigy to be burned 🔥
