96KM. HISTORY. HONOUR. 🪂 4 PARA retraced 3 PARA’s 96km Falklands route from Port San Carlos to Stanley 🤝 Along the way, veterans shared first-hand accounts of the battle, stopping to honour those who fell 🌹 Lest we forget

@robert_lyman Fascinating! I think can see: • HAP Fisher (Sir Henry etc - Leicestershire Regt) • Charles Wintour (Norfolk Regt later Evening Standard) • Colin St Clair Oakes (RA later CWGC) The big one is top left? Is that WJS himself? If so that is awesome!

@pinstripedline See also the RAF in Helmand! Apparently people were the prize in COIN… … So I’m just not sure how killing illiterate children with leaflets was particularly helpful?!? iol.co.za/news/world/200…

In the 1950s, the CIA was interested in purchasing a US Army 'leaflet rocket' to covertly deploy messages. The feedback was negative, noting that it shed metal parts and hitting people on the head wasn't a great way to prepare them to read and believe CIA propaganda messages!

@John_ForemanCBE @edwardstrngr @BO3673 @thinkdefence Eerily just used this exact quote in some academic writing ten mins ago! “In battle nothing is ever as good or as bad as the first reports of excited men would have it.” Slim, W. (1956) Defeat Into Victory: Battling Japan in Burma, 1942–1945. London: Cassell (Penguin). p. 10

When it comes to fast-breaking news, must admit, I never usually make any comments. Cool if you do, am not gatekeeping, but things move so fast, seems pointless

@robert_lyman Initially thought NW Frontier but turns out to be Ismailia, Egypt (Canal Zone) in autumn 1914 - which he knew well 28 years later! Chicago ref: Qureshi, M. The 1st Punjabis: History of the Regiment, 1759–1956. Aldershot, 1958. Correlating Wiki link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/62nd_Punj…

Great picture of the officers of the 62nd Punjab Regiment in 1914. There's one chap here who reached very high rank. Any idea?

@robert_lyman No p.s.c for the Auk? Typo surely? He went to Quetta albeit later than usual and unusually post CO in 1920/21 as a substantive Lt Col - thereby outranking most of the DS! But he was definitely qualified p.s.c.

@simonharley Hankey was the CID Secretary for 26 years. He often chaired in the PM’s absence but you’re quite right he was never appointed Chairman.

@pinstripedline I see your Ministerial Fox-Bats and raise you ECAB debating whether officers should carry swords or rifles. In 1907. 1.9.0.7. (As in five years *after* the Boer War) 😳.

Far and away the most beautiful and evocative aircraft I’ve ever flown. An absolute privilege to have piloted it around the jungles of SE Asia. Just a delight to operate: simple, predictable, robust, reliable and resilient 🌴🚁🇧🇳💂

On this day: 69 years ago, Chief Pilot Floyd Carlson and Chief Experimental Test Pilot Elton Smith made the first flight of the prototype Bell UH-1 Huey at Hurst, Texas (October 20, 1956). Huey became the most identifiable symbol of the Vietnam War, and one of the greatest helicopter designs of all time.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський@ZelenskyyUa

I met with the Chief of the UK Defence Staff, @AdmTonyRadakin_, and his successor, @ChiefofAirStaff Sir Richard Knighton. We discussed further support for Ukraine: the situation on the front lines, the needs of our warriors and the deliveries of necessary weapons, funding for Ukrainian drone production, and joint projects. We also spoke about diplomatic efforts to end the war and achieve a real and lasting peace. We must intensify our work to the maximum and ensure clarity and transparency in everything related to security guarantees. That is why we also discussed in detail the efforts of national security advisers on security guarantees for Ukraine and the developments within the Coalition of the Willing. I thank the Admiral, the United Kingdom, its Government, and its people for strengthening us from the very beginning of this war, and for consistently standing by our side.

Mearsheimer has been wrong about this conflict since 2014. None of his predictions came true. He’s been predicting the imminent fall of Ukraine for 3.5 years. I don’t blame him for running a profitable scam — I am just astonished that there are enough blistering idiots there to keep buying his garbage.
Post-Left Watch (postleftwatch.bsky.social)@PostLeftWatch

John Mearsheimer believes that Ukraine should give up fighting Russia immediately and give up 22% of their country, because according to him, if Ukraine keeps fighting, Russia will take half the country including Odesa and Kharkiv.

@BeakerBate @andy9716 @PaulKennard18 @FennellJW @ValkStrategy 4x Coy sized HAFs in 1x day in Mar 12. Chinook as backbone, Merlin proved decisive. Reactive / hungry for results removing IEDs, prestige weapons and key detainees from Nad ‘Ali. Afghan winter 80% of a Chinook with better J6 and smaller disk. Professional - seriously impressive.

I think the Texans and Hawk T2s were aquired more recently (the Texans COCO by Ascent), but moving to a single type (PC-21, Aeralis Dart) has some definate advantages, although without a two seat Typhoon or F-35, a LIFT seems essential. Grob Prefects are owned by Ascent...

@combat_boot I sense the provocative hyperbole…. …. but you’ve got a point here. Oodles of rare / precious military WF in organisations and roles far better staffed by civilians.

Apart from ‘fighting’ Div & Bde HQs all other staff officers should be civilians. There’s no reason to have very expensive, deployable military staff in any jobs at Army HQ, DES, Regional Bdes, etc. We gap jobs all over the military because we send soldiers to work in offices.
