It was more like ‘if we receive an offer over £40m, we have to notify you and have discussions about your future’. Arsenal probably knew it wasn’t a release clause but triggered it anyway to unsettle Suarez

The ridicule this got and still gets makes no sense to me.
He had a clause that stated anything over £40m had to initiate contact.
If anything, they offered 99p too much.

13 years ago today, Arsenal offered £40,000,001 to Liverpool in order to activate Luis Suárez's £40m release clause. One of the most Arsenal things ever.

@ShriSiva_ @LukeKempner @SebWassell As others have pointed out, it wasn’t a traditional release clause. If an offer came in over 40m it was to be accepted, but it was conditional that the clause wouldn’t be made public. By bidding £1 over they made it obvious they knew and had conversation prior

I wasn’t there. But none of this sounds like Arsenal being insulting.

@SebWassell @LukeKempner It was also written into the clause that telling other clubs about the clause made the clause invalid. And they put in pretty much the only offer that made it absolutely impossible to argue that they didn’t know about the clause. Which is why they got told to fuck off and did.
