@Moyer_the_Boyar @suzukisapers @mightydudbolt Not only that, but in the Clone Wars show it literally starts by establishing that Toydaria wasn't part of the republic and when Yoda goes to negotiate bringing them in, the king himself acknowledges he's only familiar with the jedis' reputation. Well after The Phantom Menace

@suzukisapers @mightydudbolt Why would the Toydarian armed forces, a local planetary military, have such regular contact and physical cooperation with the Jedi that any random grunt would've encountered them?

Watto only implies that he's familiar with mind tricks and that his species is immune to them. But he apparently thinks that encountering a Jedi is so unlikely that he doesn't even consider that Qui-Gon might actually be one. This is funny because it implies this is just something some asshole will walk in and try to do once in a while.

@mightydudbolt Doesn't Watto later directly imply that he's not only familiar with how Jedi operate but the fact that he's dealt with them before? I'd figure a Trade Frderation Viceroy would be more informed than some outer rim merchant

@mcblimp95 Buddy I follow the team. I am WAY more aware of the makeup of the team than you. You continue to assume things you shouldn't.

@Luke_SkyVOLker You are aware that the flip of that roster was built just like the one prior with defense as the mindset, right? Also, the new one has offensive guys with zero defensive mindsets. Remotely opposite build.

Gainey came in and helped elevate this defense, absolutely…but Michael Schwartz implemented a defensive strategy that changed the game for Tennessee. He had 2 top 10 defenses in KenPom in 4 years…one of those was top 5. 2017-2018 he had it a one of the top defenses nationally. 2018-2019, Tennessee led the SEC in field-goal percentage defense (.393) and blocks per game (5.4 bpg). The team’s 199 total blocks stood as a school record. The Vols held 17 opponents to fewer than 70 points and eight opponents to fewer than 60. Tennessee finished the 2020-21 season with the nation’s fourth-rated defensive efficiency, per KenPom, while ranking 13thnationally in defensive turnover percentage. Yves Pons was the 2020 SEC defensive player of the year. What Gainey did was another level, I’ll miss the hell out of Gainey…but dismissing what Tennessee did under Schwartz is a lowball take. Josiah Jordan-James called Schwartz’ defense “Ballhawking Doberman Defense” Also, maybe it shows that Rick Barnes has an eye for hiring guys with defensive talent.
Chris McDonald@mcblimp95

A lot of Tennessee fans saying “I trust a Rick Barnes defense”…do you actually? At Tennessee, prior to Justin Gainey, Barnes had 1 of 5 defenses in the top-40. The 8 years prior at Texas only 50% of those teams had a top-40 defense. Vols fans might want to rethink things.

@mcblimp95 @Ro_Co_Vols Last year. Like the roster a month ago. Was completely flipped from the year before it. And this new one has significantly better athletes up and down it.

@Luke_SkyVOLker @Ro_Co_Vols Gotcha, so the roster build this season being a complete 180 from the past 5 years or more so closely related to the other years in which I’m referencing means the defense will stay like the last 5 years? Yeah, data actually says it won’t.

@Luke_SkyVOLker @Ro_Co_Vols Gotcha, but we can fully ignore the other 10+ years noted previously and just that a defensive identity change was made? Yet, almost the entirety of the current roster is historically abysmal at defense when over those past 5 years that was not remotely the case? Okay.

@mcblimp95 @Ro_Co_Vols The data literally doesn't support it. 5 yrs consecutively is more than a big enough sample. And if "assistant coach goes brrr" is your only argument against half a decade of elite defense, then I won't be able to explain to you how structural organizations work

@Ro_Co_Vols @Luke_SkyVOLker Data analytics isn’t my everyday job or anything, but hey I’ll gladly love to convince more folks to play that Flippy disc game. Addicting! Back on topic, great coach. Not an elite defensive coach. Data supportive.

@mcblimp95 @Ro_Co_Vols If you literally ever listened to the man speak about what he values you know the defense isn't going anywhere. But that would require you to do something other than assume

@mcblimp95 @Ro_Co_Vols You clearly didn't read. Coaches (the hall of fame ones at least) reinvent themselves. Pre-Gainey he sent an assistant out to find a new system. They have since perfected it. Barnes is the HC, not Gainey. 5yr is more than a big enough sample size regardless of assistants

@mcblimp95 @Ro_Co_Vols Heaven forbid a coach reinvent himself late in his career. We love Gainey. Hope he succeeds. But don't use him to try and justify your belief Rick Barnes is anything less than what he is to make yourself feel better about your program. Gainey would tell you how dumb you sound

@Ro_Co_Vols Sure, if you want to bring that in that I also bring in the fact that 2 of the 3 years prior to Gainey (well into his tenure) the team was not a top-40 defense. Those 2 years were sandwiched in between 2 good years, but not consistent. Both seasons even more having top-5 classes.
