Striking leucistic female Pheasant on the Estcourt Park allotments in Gloucester, seen on my Christmas morning and Boxing Day morning walks, standing out against the gloomy grey winter weather. #GlosBirds

As our visits to Australia and Samoa come to a close, my wife and I would like to thank both nations for the warmest of welcomes and for the countless fond memories we will carry in our hearts for many years to come. Even when we are far apart in distance, the many close connections that unite us across the globe and through our Commonwealth family have been renewed, and will remain as profound as they are enduring. - Charles R. & Camilla R.

The King’s Garden is officially open! Tatalaina Aloā'ia le ‘Fa’asao o le Togālā'au a Lana Afioga i le Tupu’ (King’s Garden). The special new garden is planted in a shape designed to represent a crown and contains native king ferns, English roses, and teuila (red ginger), the national flower of Samoa.  The King’s Garden adjoins a site where Commonwealth leaders are invited to plant trees as part of efforts to off-set the carbon emissions of their travel to Samoa for CHOGM 2024.

Covering 5,000 hectares, O Le Pupu’Pue National Park is the oldest national park in Samoa and was the site chosen for the country’s contribution to The Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy initiative. Almost half of Samoa’s estimated 770 native plant species have been recorded in the park, along with 42 species of birds, 5 species of mammals, 4 species of lizards and 28 species of invertebrates.

Growing up, my mother adored the Royal Family. Her late Majesty The Queen's life of service exemplified the values that unite our country and society. His Majesty The King continues that legacy of service. Honoured to accompany His Majesty for the first time on a State Visit.

Mangroves provide coastal communities with many positive benefits, supporting food chains, ecosystem health, coastal pollution control, and providing protection from cyclones and storm surges. The King was given an overview of the local community’s mangrove restoration project, launched in 2021 after the village was badly affected by flooding. More than 2,500 mangrove tree seedlings have been planted by the village women’s group, and local community groups, sports clubs and schoolchildren have carried out extensive mangrove clean-ups.

It was incredibly special to attend an ‘ava welcome ceremony at the National University of Samoa. The ceremony involves the formal drinking of 'ava, made from the dried roots of the ‘ava plant, and brings together participants in a spirit of harmony.

With great sadness, we received information about the passing of Lily Ebert, a Hungarian-Jewish author, and Auschwitz survivor. Lily was born on 29 December 1923 in Bonyhád. In July 1944 she was deported to Auschwitz. Her mother Nina, younger brother Bela, and younger sister Berta were immediately murdered in gas chambers after arrival selection at Auschwitz. Lily and her two other sisters were later transferred to an ammunition factory near Leipzig where they were liberated. After the liberation, she traveled with her sisters to Switzerland. In 1953 Ebert was reunited with her other brother. The family emigrated to Israel where she married and had three children, before settling in London in 1967. The author of "Lily's Promise: How I Survived Auschwitz and Found the Strength to Live". Lili Ebert was 100 years old.
