I told @AliVitali that today was the realization of Peter Thiel’s worst fear — that the “woke American pope,” in his words, would take on Silicon Valley and challenge it to build an artificial intelligence in the service of humanity. Here’s the problem for Thiel. Leo deals in a currency he doesn't understand. There's no ballot that removes him, no impeachment, no indictment, no deportation order, no tariff that touches him. His authority comes from somewhere Thiel has no instrument to reach.

Every year, I share this video of French caretakers who take sand from Omaha Beach in Normandy, and scrub them into the letters to give them the gold coloring. They do this for all 9,386 US soldiers who died. France also gave us this land as American soil. #MemorialDayWeekend

Both American intelligence chiefs are gone. The Director of National Intelligence resigned Friday. The Head of National Counterterrorism resigned in March, citing “no imminent threat” for the war. The Secretary of State is in India. On Sunday the President wrote: time is on our side. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard submitted her resignation to the President on Friday, May 22, citing her husband Abraham Williams’s diagnosis with a rare bone cancer. She was conspicuously absent from the administration’s public messaging on the Iran war and from the behind-the-scenes deliberations. Aaron Lukas, her Principal Deputy, will serve as acting director. Joe Kent, head of the National Counterterrorism Center, resigned in protest on March 17. He cited his strong objections to the decision to go to war against Iran despite the absence of an imminent threat. Mojtaba Khamenei was wounded in the February 28 strikes that killed his father Ali Khamenei. His wife Zahra Haddad-Adel was reported killed in the same strikes; Iranian state media later said she survived. The framework: sixty-day ceasefire, Hormuz reopens without tolls, Iran clears the mines it deployed, the United States lifts its blockade, some Iranian assets are unfrozen, Iran sells oil freely, thirty days of nuclear talks. The United States version of the deal, according to two American officials cited by the New York Times, includes the removal of approximately four hundred forty kilograms of sixty-percent enriched uranium from Iranian territory. The Iranian version, according to a senior Iranian official cited by Reuters, includes no such commitment. Both positions appear in the same memorandum of understanding. The two American lead negotiators, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, hold approximately four billion dollars in private Gulf state investment between them. On Saturday Trump asked the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Pakistan to formally recognize Israel. There was silence on the line. Trump joked and asked if they were still there. He then wrote on Truth Social that perhaps Iran would like to join the Abraham Accords as well. The Iranian Embassy in New Delhi issued a press statement Sunday rejecting Secretary Rubio’s framing and accusing the United States of distorting the realities of the region. White House Communications Director Stephen Cheung responded to former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s criticism on X: “Mike Pompeo has no idea what the fuck he’s talking about. He should shut his stupid mouth and leave the real work to the professionals.” Senators Ted Cruz, Lindsey Graham, Roger Wicker who chairs the Armed Services Committee, and Tom Cotton who chairs the Intelligence Committee all publicly opposed the deal. Brent crude fell below one hundred dollars in early Monday Asian trading. The dollar index dropped. American gasoline averaged four dollars and fifty-one cents per gallon over Memorial Day, fifty-one percent higher than the start of the war. Trump’s complete Sunday post: “I have informed my representatives not to rush into a deal in that time is on our side. Both sides must take their time and get it right. There can be no mistakes!” The blockade remains. The mines remain. The uranium remains. The Supreme Leader remains. The intelligence chiefs are gone. Time, the President says, is on our side. Both sides are performing peace while preparing war. History will record this weekend.

While Putin dreams of capturing Donbas, cracks are growing inside the Kremlin elite The Guardian reports that Russian officials, oligarchs, and security figures are becoming increasingly frustrated with the prolonged war, the economic crisis, and Putin’s decisions. “Some kind of catastrophe is approaching,” one source told the newspaper, describing the mood inside the system. At the same time, the Kremlin still hopes to fully seize Donbas by the end of 2026. However, sources interviewed by The Guardian say talk of a possible coup is still premature.

In March the Pentagon designated Anthropic a supply chain risk for refusing to allow Claude to be used for autonomous weapons or mass surveillance of American citizens. In April the Treasury Secretary and the Federal Reserve Chair convened the chief executives of the five largest American banks in an emergency closed-door meeting at Treasury headquarters to address cybersecurity risks of Anthropic’s new model. On Friday OpenAI filed confidentially for an initial public offering and Bloomberg reported that Anthropic is closing the largest private funding round in venture capital history this week at a nine hundred billion dollar valuation. The lab the executive branch tried to disqualify is about to be valued at more than the top five American defense contractors combined. The model is called Claude Mythos. Anthropic announced it on April seventh and immediately chose not to release it commercially. Mythos can autonomously identify and exploit zero-day vulnerabilities across every major operating system and browser, including a twenty-seven year old bug in OpenBSD that had survived decades of expert review. On a Firefox benchmark it converted discovered vulnerabilities into working exploits one hundred and eighty-one times, against two for Anthropic’s prior frontier model. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell pulled the CEOs of Citigroup, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Goldman Sachs out of other meetings to address the risk. On Thursday President Trump was scheduled to sign an executive order creating a voluntary frontier-model review regime for capabilities of the kind Mythos demonstrated. Hours before the ceremony Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and former White House AI advisor David Sacks called the President directly. The order was killed. OpenAI had publicly supported it. Anthropic, the lab that triggered the order, did not attend the signing. Per Axios sources, Trump “just hates regulation.” Anthropic’s revenue trajectory is the steepest in the history of American technology. At end of 2025 annualized revenue was nine billion dollars. At the end of March 2026 it was thirty billion. By June 2026 it is projected at fifty billion. Second quarter revenue is projected at ten point nine billion dollars, more than doubling first quarter. First operating profit is expected at five hundred and fifty-nine million dollars. Claude Code alone generates two point five billion in annualized revenue. Anthropic instead routed Mythos into Project Glasswing, a private defensive coalition that scans and patches critical infrastructure before adversaries can exploit it. The members are Amazon Web Services, Apple, Broadcom, Cisco, CrowdStrike, Google, JPMorgan Chase, the Linux Foundation, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Palo Alto Networks. These companies operate the digital substrate of the United States. The Pentagon’s supply chain risk is now the central node of US critical infrastructure defense. The same federal government that designated Anthropic a supply chain risk in March made Anthropic the financial system’s cybersecurity reference in April. The same administration that excluded Anthropic for refusing autonomous lethal weapons watched its President postpone an AI safety order targeting Mythos at the request of three executives lobbying hardest against any safety regime. The same market that priced OpenAI at eight hundred fifty-two billion dollars with one dollar twenty-two cents lost per dollar of revenue is pricing Anthropic at nine hundred billion with first-ever profit. The Pentagon’s exclusion list is more valuable than the Pentagon’s procurement list. The supply chain risk is the supply chain.

"Sometimes over the objections of the CIA." Read that clause one more time. The CIA objected to releasing this material. She released it anyway, then told the public it said something it didn't. Two analysts wrote an honest Venezuela assessment. She fired them. Trump used the corrupted version to justify an invasion. That chain of events is documented. That is not institutional damage in the abstract - that is a war built partly on intelligence she helped distort. She wasn't sidelined for being too principled. She was sidelined because even her brand of loyalty wasn't quite enough for a president who wanted a weapon, not an adviser. The exit is tidy. The trail behind it is not.

⚠️ Ebola outbreak in DR Congo is spiraling out of control More than 900 suspected Ebola cases have already been reported in the country. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said 101 infections have been laboratory confirmed so far. The situation is escalating rapidly: the WHO has classified the national risk level as “very high” and declared the outbreak an international public health emergency. Is Africa once again on the brink of a major epidemic? Let’s hope not.

Francis Fukuyama: "America under Trump has been engaged in such a determined process of self-harm that China does not really need to do anything other than sit back and watch it unfold. Trump predicted that China would not attack Taiwan while he was the president. And he may be right about this. He does not want to get in the way of a declining United States."
