I firmly believe that we can literally feel the amount of handmade human care put into something. That’s why the old animated films often feel like they have more “soul.” That is the expression of human care you’re sensing. I hope we don’t lose this.

For the first time in my life I was so angry I punched a (stone) wall. It hurt. My friends were gathered around me and no one had ever seen me like this. I saw it in their faces: What happened to Sterling? They were worried. In highschool, during my senior year, I was ranked 17th in the state. And only the top 16 get to swim at state. (I was only 17th by 0.01 of a second by the way.) But being 17th meant I didn't get to swim at state... unless someone dropped out. So I was ready. I came to state fully clothed in my speedo/jammer ready to rumble. Excited to cheer on my teammates. And praying that someone would drop out. I WANTED to swim! And when my race came up I saw there was an empty lane. I immediately went to the group directing the event and asked: "Can I swim?! Someone dropped out!" "No" they said. "Why not?" I asked. "You just can't." they replied. I was so confused. They had said I could swim if someone dropped out. And here they were telling me no. Even my coach didn't really have an answer for me. This was my last chance in high school to swim in state. And I didn't know what to do. I wanted it. And couldn't have it for unexplainable reasons. And then my race kicked off... With an empty lane that I could have been in. I've dreamed of just getting up on the block and swimming anyways even though they said no. --- Things like this are the reason I decided I would build games this year. I've found that when I let things (including ME) get in the way of a righteous desire... That I get angry. So I gave myself permission to build games. I'm still on a mission to publish 5 games before March 27th, 2026. And we are at 3 games so far: Gyrii, Hexii, and Rocket to Heaven. These are all on my website. With over 350 game sessions! The next game will be published on steam so I can make money. It will be called Cosmii (because "Cosmos" was already taken, and I like the "ii") If you'd like to play, give me a follow! I'll be sharing a lot about it this month!

The games I've built have opened every door in my life: - I'm married because of a video game - I got my first programming job (building video games!) because of a game I published on the App Store - I taught myself programming by building video games - I found my best friend in college because he was building a video game Building games has pushed my mind. Stretched my capacity. And turned me into a better human. They have brought people together. Built some of the longest and best friendships I've ever had. Both personally and in business. Games have opened doors! But I never gave myself permission to be a "game developer." I even wrote things like this in 2024: "I need to double down on my opportunities to build games, especially with other people." But I never game myself permission to actually do it. Until this year. For some reason, my mind would say things like: - "Work before play Sterling" - "You can't make money building games" - "That is not useful work Sterling. Build something useful." Those things hurt. They shredded my soul. And even now some of those elements remain. And I have decided to focus on the power that I feel when I focus on building video games. On bringing people together to laugh and PLAY! On teaching people things to improve their life. And I'm looking to surround myself with other game developers that I can work with. Build games with. I need that community. If you know anyone (especially in the Lehi, Utah area) that is building games, I'd love to meet them! Tag them below! I've been looking around and I'm not seeing anyone in the Lehi, Utah area that does this in an organized, consistent way. So I may start my own. Like I said, I need it! Let's build some games! =D p.s. The game below is a first version of Sentinel. 50+ people used it in college to learn to program in Java!

@spacetime_db @TylerFCloutier Congrats for the 2.0 release. Looks great. Ability to do api calls from the cloud is a super nice addition.👏 Speaking for indie game development, is there any way to do Steam auth yet? (Steam users don't want to double log-in.) Keep it up.

@JonasTyroller released a video 1 year ago about game dev being a "search algorithm". And I am taking this to heart. I already intended to publish 5 games before March 27th, 2026. Now I want to do even more! Simplify! Find the game people want to play! AI makes it possible.
