kudos to the team at @spacetime_db. something magical is going on over there. im only about 2 days in and i have a mostly functional clone of discord. i can upload the frontend to any old server and it just works.. for anyone, all the time. no telemetry, private, functional.

@andrewvijay @TylerFCloutier We have not tested up to 100k connections on a single machine, but in principle around 100k connections should be possible. I don’t think you’d need a particularly large instance either, we do not create a thread per connection.

@TylerFCloutier @spacetime_db What would be the instance size required to handle this load in spacetimedb? Like 100k connections?

Our first major player density/server test was a success! at one point, we had nearly 80 players standing in a small area and the performance was incredible, no major server issues. Huge shoutout to the folks at @spacetime_db for making this possible so early on in development!

@ptremblay If your customer is operating their own instance, you’re good 👍

@spacetime_db I'm building a self-hosted project management app and considering SpacetimeDB. Two licensing questions under the BSL: - Can my installer download & install SpacetimeDB at setup time (customer accepts the license)? - Or can I bundle it directly in my distribution? ~0–1000 users per deployment (projected), single instance each. Hosted by the customer.

Happy with this weekend results! I have a working multiplayer world generator. You just modify a template and click publish and people can immediatly join. And I can't believe how just-worksy it feels with @spacetime_db

Another day, another Selo Empire build. I’m using @spacetime_db to build the game, a Caesar II-like city builder set in the contemporary Balkans. Everything you see here is networked, persistent, and running on Railway. There’s no hitching, rubber-banding, or network lag.

Postgres is just incredible. It can avg ~500k-1M db writes a day. And it just handles it like a champ. Only 1 reboot per day.

This is exactly the reason we built @spacetime_db. Our game engineers should not need to be distributed systems experts just to build @BitCraftOnline. SpacetimeDB is fast, but its real value is that by putting your code inside the DB, we can handle the distrib systems for you.

vibecoder asks claude code to build a chat app, gets a working prototype in 20 minutes, immediately tweets "just killed slack and discord"… brother you don't even know what a distributed system is. you don't know what database replication means. you have no idea how websocket connections behave at scale or what happens when 50k people are online at once and someone's message needs to show up in 200ms across 3 continents slack has engineers making $300k+ who have spent a decade solving problems you don't even know exist yet. race conditions, eventual consistency, message ordering, presence systems, file storage at scale, search indexing across billions of messages your app works on localhost with 2 connections. that's not the same thing as "killing slack" that's a college homework assignment the prototype is maybe 0.5% of what makes these products actually work in production. the remaining 99.5% is infrastructure, reliability, edge cases, and years of iteration on problems that only surface when real humans use your thing at scale and the worst part is the confidence. "yeah its not perfect but ai one-shotted it, just need to adjust a few things and deploy" - the few things you need to adjust IS the entire product. thats like pouring a foundation and saying you basically built a skyscraper, just need to adjust a few things ai is genuinely incredible for building tools and prototypes. i use it every day. but there's this weird thing happening where people who have never shipped anything to real users at scale now think the hard part of software is writing the first 200 lines of code it never was bro

Managed to get @vike_js + @solid_js + @spacetime_db working. The instant sync is so fun, feels like Convex. Few things that'd make this a lot better: - oob solidjs support - if spacetime list - showed db names? - if there was smth like spacetime studio <db> (like prisma studio)
