Statista graph sharing is not a sell indicator on a person because the data is wrong It’s a sell indicator because of what it says about how they think and reason about the world
Stephanie H. Murray@stephmurrayyyy

Seems weird to blame this on statista tho. It's just showing us America's TFR over time. That's a totally normal measure demographers have long used to track shifts in fertility behavior. @lymanstoneky is building on a 2024 paper to argue we should be interested in EFR instead.

When the paper came out, I flagged that 1) wow it's a lot of interaction terms and 2) the car seat laws seem fuzzy and 3) wait, the "fertility" variable isn't a fertility variable. it's a kids in the home variable. I suspect the paper is substantially in error.
Scott Winship@swinshi

If the car seats as contraception papers holds up I’ll be shocked. I say this as someone who hasn’t read it, so take it for what it’s worth, but go ahead and time-stamp it.

It’s embarrassing to admit that for me, the most annoying part of raising kids is: if I want my kids to be curious & independent, then I need to say yes enthusiastically when they ask if they can make eggs and I know I’m about to have the most annoying 15 minutes in human history
O.W. Root@owroot

Our older kids (6, 4) get their breakfasts ready just about every morning. It takes about 4 times as long as it should, there is probably more mess than there should be, but they do a pretty decent job, it gives us one less thing to do (even if unfortunate spills might occur), and it teaches them something they need to know. I think this is what a lot of parenting amounts to.

@ehaspel Hmmmmm given fungubility of money I’m unsure this is a very informative result. Better to ask some kind of money shortfall question informative for bettors and non-bettors and see if bettors have it more

Think sports betting is just an individual vice? Think again. Nearly ONE IN THREE households with children in which there's a family member engaged in sports betting has pulled back on essential spending in the past year to either make bets or cover losses.

You’ve also spent a lifetime inhaling ambient cultural messaging that there is something reckless or soft-minded about starting a family. That taking risks to achieve your professional dreams is shrewd but pursuing a family is rash..." Incredible from @AbigailShrier @TheFP

@lymanstoneky Lottery studies have done across many populations doesn’t solve the selection bias at all though unless participation was mandatory or reached some insane share of the population.

Lottery studies exist across a pretty wide range of pops and seem to show this approximate pattern of results in most, so generalization is prob fairly credible. One-time windfall wealth has no effect positive OR negative on women's fertility, slightly boost men's.

Thread, with an interesting result about marriage intentions. Question: are there differences between lottery players and non-players? NB @BradWilcoxIFS
