The issue of fake or adulterated honey is cropping up all over the world. In Turkey the ministry of agriculture took action against it. turkiyetoday.com/lifestyle/popu…
@WeobleyHoney@ElmTreeBees The results were that 24 out of 25 imported supermarket honeys were atypical for honey. One British supermarket honey was fine. 5 honeys from British beekeepers were fine. The message has got to be Buy British honey
Found a huge honey 1.36kg squeezy on display at a popular retailer the otherday
Honestly, the size is increasing and the price is getting cheaper and cheaper.
<£800 tonne Chinese honey is making us 🇬🇧 beefarmers look like we're ripping off the general public 👎
@ElmTreeBees@WeobleyHoney Govt take advice from someone whose business is importing and packing 31p ‘honey’. Why would appropriate testing & enforcement ever be taken if it would impact their business?
@ElmTreeBees@WeobleyHoney In 2020 imported honey from a large UK supermarket was found to be adulterated after tests. A member of public took it to Trading standards & they tested it. They also said sugar syrup was added but govt. took no action. Govt is too close to their advisors
@ElmTreeBees@britishbee@GwenynGruffydd Maybe there are other reasons? For example that the authorities do no appropriate testing nor enforcement, that they deny that there is a problem in the UK, despite evidence to the contrary. That people are too scared to speak out etc.
Yet can you name 1 product that has actually been recalled?
Lots of articles like this over the years yet nothing has ever been done about it. Either the testing science is duff or there's lack of public will. Maybe the general public are happy providing it's 99p and at least looks like honey. It's also a possibility that the chinese are good at honey farming and are making us look like inefficient chumps. I'd like to know.
"Honey fraud...poses a significant challenge to the global honey industry by impacting beekeepers’ livelihoods, who cannot compete with cheaper adulterated alternatives, and damaging consumer trust."

@LynneIngram6 The safest way is to buy #honey is from your local #beekeeper. Be aware, the full beekeepers details must be present on the label. If you are unable to trace the address & contact number then be suspicious that they are hiding something, the honey may well be from another country
@HoneyBeesUK Some of the imported samples had DNA from American and/or European Foulbrood and Small Hive Beetle. Who knows what chemical treatments may have been used? if our bees got access to these they could be at risk. #buybritishhoney
@LynneIngram6 The National Bee Unit tested #honey samples from supermarkets and nearly all had #Foulbrood bacteria which could infect honey #bees if fed back to them. It's down to the blending process in factories. This process could take place several times over before reaching the table.
If you knew that the honey you just bought came from somewhere like this photo, rather than from a hive, where bees had gathered nectar before ripening it naturally, would you change your view about it? #celebraterealhoney
The lack of appropriate testing in the UK has led to a special 'UK grade 'honey' being developed. It couldn't be sold in Europe where more testing is carried out.
@LynneIngram6 Ok well I'm always a bit sceptical of unnamed sources & such. It's interesting work though & it would explain why it all tastes so bland and all looks the same. Interesting, thanks
