@Antifant_Troet @Sir_Rainbows @BoomaDingo @Sirregenal1 @gunburd And for the sake of financial options, you can subscribe to GeForce now and play all your games from anywhere, even the living room, from basically any device. For the price of a Steam machine, you can subscribe for over 4 years and run games at higher quality.

@Antifant_Troet @Sir_Rainbows @BoomaDingo @Sirregenal1 @gunburd No one expects upgradability from a handheld and the Deck released with comparable pricing and hardware for the time. Machine has nothing to directly compare to. VS PC, it’s not great performance. VS Console, not great pricing. VS handhelds, less portable.

I see armies of nerds crying 'Valve wont subsidize my console cheaper - i pinky promise to buy games' like its a charity project are already out in full force. Ask Meta how that strategy worked out. If you cant afford it at $1500 you aint affording $1500 in games either.

@Antifant_Troet @Sir_Rainbows @BoomaDingo @Sirregenal1 @gunburd Like I genuinely don’t care if I see pores in skin or bubble in beer bottles. I would rather a game that looks and tuns smooth. This focus on extremely detailed graphics is a large part of the problem which contributes to higher hardware demands. Least thats my opinion.

@Antifant_Troet @Sir_Rainbows @BoomaDingo @Sirregenal1 @gunburd Except it’s limited by a GPU and CPU that can’t be upgraded. It may not be able to be bricked, but it’s “outdated” before it even reaches shelves. Not an issue if you stick to low-fidelity indies though I suppose. What we actually need atm is devs optimizing for lesser hardware.

@Antifant_Troet @Sir_Rainbows @BoomaDingo @Sirregenal1 @gunburd If your niche is so small that the goalpost for target market is shifting with every criticism, then it sounds like there’s no market for said product. I don’t think this will flop, but it will be the iPhone of gaming. There was a niche for the Stadia once upon a time too…

@Sir_Rainbows @BoomaDingo @Antifant_Troet @Sirregenal1 @gunburd This idea of a smaller PC is so funny. I literally run an old refurb NUC in my living room and Steam Remote Play to the main machine. 800$ savings to not buy a little box that runs games worse. For those that don’t mind extra setup, Moonlight works even better.

Unless you really want this tiny form factor, then I wouldn't even recommend it for an entry level PC at all. Who are these reviewers? Look at what you can get for the same price.

The Steam Machine, at $1049, is a bit too expensive to take on the PS5 or the Xbox Series X. But even at that seemingly high price, it’s still one of the cheapest and almost certainly the easiest way to get into PC gaming right now. Our review: bit.ly/4uNi025 #IGNSummerOfGaming

@DestinyFomo @PhantomZer013 @K__Med Plug in USB, turn on tower, hit button on keyboard, install SteamOS. If this is the hurdle to save 100+$ dollars, when the internet is loaded with free resources, we might be cooked as a society lol Valve should consider selling preconfigured USB’s with software to update ‘em!

I want the Steam Machine to succeed. The deck was the crawling phase, the machine will be the walking phase, and the frame will be the running phase. Prove me wrong Valve, drop a Machine that slaps and makes me want the Frame outta pure FOMO. Send me into debt daddy Gabe~

@Skoshche @PolarStar64 Also I absolutely LOVE Linux and not trying to shit on it. Just after being on all sides of the field (including Mac) they all work great as long as you keep up on updates. Mac is arguably the easiest though. 😅 iPhone is the true sleeper console! 🤣

@Skoshche @PolarStar64 If people were forced to update their PC’s like consoles do - you’d realize how quickly Windows runs like a console. Linux and Proton are not immune to those issues either. Plenty of known bugs and crashes with stock Steam Decks. You just haven’t personally ran into one yet.

@JayHooft @Disbearity Hey man, I don’t leave the house these days. But when I did, I lugged my whole ass tower with me. Consoles had it nice when that travel case with the built-in screen and speakers came out. I grabbed one of those fast…lol. Then gaming laptops showed up…

But wait, if Gaben is a madman this is part of the long-term. Introducing the #SteamFrame - a modular updatable box. Always relevant for the modern gamer! Then the Steam Machine returns to being the good old remote gaming box it was always destined to be~ I see the vision…

Multi-factor: -PS5ish level performance (6yr old console) -1k price point clearly not competing with consoles -Size is the only benefit at this point -No GPU/CPU upgrade path, will age out like consoles and require whole unit upgrades Planned Obsolescence in a smaller box.

"The price is too high nobody will buy it" So i went to newegg and I was able to get a rather similar parts based on the specs they have and i came with this : newegg.io/3c777cc I went to the 2TB version and ... i got rather similar prices?

@mikesulsenti @IconEnjoyer Because as someone who builds PC’s, I caught a prebuilt on sale that was cheaper than if I had ordered the parts myself not including shipping. All name brands parts cept the PSU, and that’s cheap to replace vs the money saved. Some of ya’ll just like burning money lol

First off, no, the hardware value is in line with DIY Second, the Steam Machine comes with a $100 controller Third, the Steam Machine is a tiny form factor you won't build for the price Fourth, it's a prebuilt computer Fifth, you chose a Rosewill PSU for your example. Have fun with your electrical fire
Sebastian Castellanos@Sebasti66855537

Steam Machine? More like Meme Machine. For about the same price you could build a MUCH more powerful gaming PC, at least with US prices. As such, I strongly recommend not buying it.

@Skoshche @PolarStar64 Idk what “sizeably less” means in this context. I boot up my PC, install game, and play game. Sizably less game selection due to anti-cheat support maybe? Sizably less customization? Love Linux, but idk why people act like it’s some monumental task to game on Windows lol

@PolarStar64 To be fair it is a sizeably less amount of tinkering required, and far less if you are solely limiting yourself to approved things like verified working games and the steam store If you get into emulation or not fully approved games that's on you for branching out

@cetraxiv @rtm_pete It was explored, and failed. NUC’s have been in circulation for years often around the same price. Even USB connected full-size GPU’s exist(ed). The sacrifice is often performance due to cooling limitations. Most of the Steam Machine case is filled with a heatsink iirc.

@rtm_pete prebuilt small form factor gaming PCs is a niche that has not been exploited yet, and the few exceptions that exist are easily at least 2x - 3x more expensive than the steam machine

I'm seeing a bunch of "here's a PC TWICE as powerful as a Steam Machine that you could build for the same price!" They all have no-name RAM, SSD, and power supplies that all have a much higher risk of failing and a 0% chance of you getting a warranty claim. Gamers Nexus put out a build that shows you could save ~$120 with similar performance with a much larger form factor. So $120 gets you the tiny form factor and a pre-installed OS and setup. The value proposition exists. It might not be right for you, and certainly isn't right for me at that price, but there's a market for this thing.
