One of the most fascinating things I have learned from interviewing game devs for over half a decade is the sheer volume of game devs that either rarely play games or don't play them at all outside of work. (one dev told me they haven't played a game in over 10 years, you'd be surprised who it is, given their body of work.)
These seem to be the main reasons for this
1. They spend all day looking at a screen so they don't want to come home and look at a screen.
2. They don't want to be influenced by other games
3. Becoming a parent takes up all their time
4. Games have become monotonous homework for them
5. There are so many games that choosing one is too daunting now lol.
It is a fascinating phenomenon

Lil quick animation with @alrgwoodnbadger's rig.
When I saw the model I just had to do something with it 🥰
I wish I had more energy for personal projects like that outside of work.
Image quality will probably be shit but tf can I do 🙃

Here's a short example of how I used reference video to create and modify animations in The Last of Us Part I. In these examples I'm studying the body mechanics, posing, and giving myself a good understanding of the motion, while also looking for details that I can add into the animation. You don't necessarily need to do it at the same speed. And things will often change when you're animating it. This is a foundational step when you want to achieve realism.
In addition, I'm always thinking about the character themselves, and the context of the moment. Ellie is a small (yet strong) girl. So I added in the sensation of the weight of the gate, bringing it back down as she's transferring grip, and how there is some play between the wheels and the rails it rides in. Little things that adds to the final result.
