social-democratic” party with watered-down programme (e.g., Labour Party was used by the left in 2023, though it later distanced itself).
Work through trade unions (NLC, ASUU) and civil society coalitions.
Build a revolutionary organization that does not register as a party and focuses on “entryism” or mass struggles (this is what the DSM and other groups do).
Bottom Line
You can legally try to register a communist or socialist party, but the chances of INEC approving it and the party surviving harassment and electoral irrelevance are extremely low. Most serious Nigerian Marxists today focus on trade-union work, student activism, and building small revolutionary collectives rather than wasting resources on INEC registration that will likely be rejected or later revoked.
If you are determined, start by linking up with existing groups such as:
Democratic Socialist Movement (DSM)
Socialist Workers League
Amilcar Cabral Ideological School network
Movement for a Socialist Alternative (MSA)
They have decades of experience and can advise whether a new party bid is worth the effort in 2025–2026.

Was doing research on the plan to start CPN here is what I found out
Starting a communist party in Nigeria is legally possible but faces significant political, social, cultural, and security challenges. Communism as an ideology has very limited popular support in Nigeria, and Marxist-Leninist or similar parties have historically remained marginal. Below is a practical, step-by-step guide based on Nigeria’s actual legal framework and political realities as of 2025.
1. Understand the Legal Framework
Political parties in Nigeria are regulated by the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act 2022. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) registers parties.
Key INEC requirements for registration (Section 222 of the Constitution + INEC guidelines):
National spread: Offices in the FCT + at least 24 of the 36 states.
Minimum membership: Evidence of members in at least 24 states + FCT.
Registered office in Abuja.
Party constitution and manifesto that do not advocate violent overthrow of government or ethnic/religious exclusivity.
Payment of registration fees (currently around ₦1 million, subject to change).
A communist party is not illegal per se, but the manifesto and public statements must not call for violent revolution or class warfare using force. Peaceful democratic socialism or Marxism is acceptable on paper.
2. Existing Precedents
There have been several attempts:
Socialist Labour Party, National Conscience Party (NCP), Socialist Workers and Youth League (SWL), etc.
None have ever won significant seats at federal level.
The most “successful” left-leaning party was the Socialist Party of Nigeria (SPN), affiliated with the Democratic Socialist Movement (DSM/CWI), registered briefly in 2018 but de-registered by INEC in 2022 along with 73 other parties.
As of 2025, no openly communist or Marxist-Leninist party is currently registered with INEC.
3. Practical Steps to Start One
A. Form a core group (10–50 committed cadres)
Usually university-based Marxists, trade unionists, ex-militants from the Niger Delta, or civil society activists.
Ideological cohesion is critical; Nigerian left is historically fractured (Trotskyists vs Maoists vs orthodox Marxists, etc.).
B. Draft documents
Party name (avoid “Communist Party of Nigeria” — too provocative; past groups used “Socialist Party”, “Peoples Alternative”, etc.).
Manifesto: Focus on anti-imperialism, nationalization of oil, free education/healthcare, land reform — but phrase it in democratic, non-violent language.
Constitution that meets INEC requirements.
C. Build the required national structure
Open offices in at least 24 states + FCT (even if it’s just a room with a signboard and a registered address).
Recruit at least a few members in each of those states (INEC verifies).
D. Raise money
Registration fees + renting offices + logistics will cost several hundred million naira.
Funding sources are limited because Nigerian bourgeoisie and foreign donors will avoid you.
E. Apply to INEC
Submit application with verified membership lists, office addresses, audited accounts, etc.
INEC usually rejects first applications on technicalities; expect 2–3 rounds.
4. Major Obstacles You Will Face
Popular perception: Communism is widely associated with atheism, failure of Soviet Union, and Biafran propaganda from the civil war era.
Religious opposition: Both northern Muslim leaders and southern Pentecostal pastors will denounce you.
State repression: DSS and police routinely harass small left parties (raids, arrests under cybercrime laws for “inciting” posts, etc.).
Ethnic/Regional politics: Nigeria votes largely along ethnic and religious lines; class appeal is weak.
Internal security: In the North, any radical party risks being labeled “Boko Haram sympathizer”; in the South-South, militants may see you as competition.
5. Realistic Alternatives (Used by the Nigerian Left)
Most Nigerian Marxists now choose one of these routes instead of full party registration:
Register a “

I congratulate the Islamic Republic of Iran for standing up to the Zionist bullies and Talmudic troublers of the world, teaching them the lesson of their lives, bringing them to their knees and forcing them to go running to their big brother America for help in the field of battle and to beg for a ceasefire.
In its entire 77 year history the Zionist state has never suffered such shock, panic, trepidation, terror, infrastructural damage and shame and their cities have never been so savagely attacked and destroyed.
They picked a fight with a strong and proud nation and got not just a bloody nose but a thorough beating. Never will they launch an unprovoked attack on Iran again.
I thank God for the ceasefire and for the fact that lives will be saved. I commend the courage of the Armed Forces of Iran who were restrained in their military engagements and operations and who refused to commit atrocities, level Tel Aviv or Jerusalem to the ground or target civilians.
Finally I commend the remarkable strength, faith and fortitude of Ayatollah Khameini @fr_Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, who kept his head held high throughout this war and inspired millions of people in Iran and indeed from all over the world with his humility, resilience and courage. He refused to bow to Bibi Netanyahu or Trump and his faith in God shielded him from death, harm and defeat.
The Zionists and Americans not only failed in their objective to destroy all of Iran's nuclear enrichment plants and nuclear and ballistic missile threats, despite all pretentions to the contrary, but they also failed to kill Ayatollah Khameini, to effect regime change, to spark off a wider war in the Middle East, to take us one step closer to WW3 and to flatten the cities of Iran and slaughter its people in the same way as they have done in Gaza.
I pray the ceasefire holds and I urge the Iranians to continue to be vigilant and to watch and to pray because the Zionists hate peace and cannot be trusted.
Permit me to end with the following. I will continue to display and voice my utter and complete contempt and disgust for the child-killing, mass murdering, ethnic cleansing, genocidal, ethno-supremacist, fascist, racist, religiously fanatic, apartheid State of Israel as long as it continues to occupy the land of the Palestinians, to detain and torture the captives, to indulge in abominable and unspeakable practices, to bring turmoil to the Middle East, to bring war and destruction to its neighbours, to call its citizens God's chosen people and members of the master race and to slaughter the people of Gaza.
I urge every right-thinking person who has managed to retain his or her humanity, who seeks justice, who cherishes peace, who loves God, who regards the Palestinians as human beings and who has a modicum of decency and compassion to do same.
Until they refrain from their wicked ways and horrendous atrocities I shall continue to resist the sons and daughters of perdition, to expose the Ashkazi of Israel and the worshippers of Baal, to spit on their 'Star of Remphan' and to oppose the cult of the Synagogue of satan who falsely claim to be semites and Jews.
