This man lost his job and started selling chicken rice and BBQ meat. That was 15 years ago. His first customers still come back today. His name is Lee Tart Mum or people call him Mr Lee. He was born in Penang, grew up in Thailand and eventually settled in Kuala Lumpur. For years, he worked as a clerk. He was the everything man… handled whatever needed handling, spoke English well, kept things running. Then the company downsized. They gave him one extra month’s salary and wished him well. He spent a year looking for work. Nothing came. So in 2011, he made a decision. He would start a chicken rice and BBQ meat (non-halal) business. He didn’t go to culinary school. There was no family recipe to follow. Just a man who decided to figure it out. He chose charcoal. It’s slower and harder to do (and charcoal is expensive now). But the taste is different and he knew it. He experimented. Adjusted. Got better over time. His stall has a 4.8 rating on Google. Customers who first came in 2011 still come today. Even during the pandemic, people kept ordering. I asked him when he plans to retire. He said he won’t. Not yet. Because he still wants to serve his customers, even at 61. His wife asked him the same thing. Same answer. Mr Lee shared with me three lessons: 1. Always try and experiment. 2. Never give up even when things get really hard. 3. And always try to be better because there’s always someone out there who’s smarter than you. He doesn’t need a Michelin Star. His customers already know where to find him. Former prisoner Khong Yen Chong, who once earned an unlikely place in the Guinness Book of Records for a mural he painted on the walls of Pudu Prison - now long demolished - passed away on Feb 20 at the age of 78. In a saddening turn, the man once tied to a piece of living history spent his final days in obscurity, with his body left unclaimed at the Penang Hospital morgue for 50 days. An NGO was finally granted permission on April 10 to claim his remains. Various parties came together to organise a wake in his honour. Yesterday, Khong was laid to rest through cremation. “…budaya UMNO kini dalam PKR.” Ayat Rafizi ni berat. Ia datang dari orang yang nampak parti yang dulu lahir untuk lawan kebusukan kuasa, sekarang makin cekap meniru perangai kuasa itu. Dulu lawan penyakit. Sekarang penyakit tu dibela dalam rumah sendiri. PKR lahir dari luka Reformasi. Ya, ada bekas orang UMNO dalam tu. Tapi ada juga aktivis, mahasiswa, NGO, generasi muda yang betul-betul percaya politik boleh dibersihkan. Sebab itu orang dulu ikut bukan sebab jawatan. Orang ikut sebab harapan. Masalah besar bermula bila pembangkang lama sangat duduk dekat kerusi kuasa. Masa di luar, semua petah cakap pasal prinsip. Bila dah masuk bilik aircond kuasa, terus datang pakej penuh: jawatan, puak, kartel, bodek, kabel, disiplin terpilih. Masa tu baru nampak siapa pegang idealisme, siapa pegang kalkulator. Sebab itu orang yang tak attach pada mana-mana parti sekarang nampak semua makin serupa. Dulu masa jadi pembangkang, SPRM, rasuah, kronisme, mafia korporat disebut tiap hari. Bila dah jadi kerajaan, nada terus tukar: tunggu siasatan, ikut proses, jangan ganggu kestabilan. Jadi isu dia bukan sekadar “PKR berkawan dengan UMNO”. Dalam politik, kawan sementara itu biasa. Tapi bila kompromi terlalu jauh dan terlalu lama, itu bukan strategi lagi. Itu penyerapan. Akhirnya bukan UMNO yang cair dalam PKR. PKR yang makin pekat rasa UMNO. “Budaya UMNO” itu bukan logo. Itu perangai kuasa: yang kritik ketua dicop masalah, yang jilat naik cepat, yang pegang prinsip dipulau, yang ada akses lebih laku daripada yang ada maruah. Budaya macam ni tak perlukan lambang dacing pun untuk hidup. Akhirnya reformis tinggal dengan satu soalan paling pahit: nak setia pada parti, atau setia pada sebab parti itu dulu diwujudkan? Sebab bila wadah dah mula busuk, orang waras terpaksa pilih: nak jaga kerusi atau jaga nurani. Tragedi besar Reformasi bukan bila musuh lama masih hidup. Tragedi sebenar ialah bila parti yang dibina untuk melawan budaya busuk itu akhirnya pakai budaya yang sama untuk terus berkuasa. Bila itu berlaku, yang tinggal bukan reformasi. Yang tinggal cuma slogan lama yang disewa untuk tutup perangai baru.
