@FattyNoNatty Three is much more expensive than two. You need an extra bedroom. You need a minivan or suv instead of a sedan. More time sinks, etc. Two is best for the modern world.

Yeah Massachusetts is the only state not doing the stipend model - but it is way less than what Nannie’s charge around here if you are in the 3+ kid range. California has hourly too but they’re allowed to deduct a bigger amount for room&board so even with maximum hours they’re paying $500 weekly whereas MA it’s $630 maximum 45 hours.

@lilbernadette @MostlyMonkey In Massachusetts au pairs have to be paid minimum wage for the house worked regardless of room and board. That’s a minimum of 31,000. Plus you have to have an extra bedroom to house them

@WallStreetApes Lots of regulations here keep this as standard. 1 teacher per every 3 infant. Our neighboring state in Rhode Island it’s 1 teacher per 5. Massachusetts also made the Au Pair program the most expensive in the country. We have to pay 5x for it than every other state.

Like this is really a legitimate problem that needs to be addressed because people can't afford childcare” Foreigners and illegals get this 100% for free, paid for by taxpayers Americans can’t afford to have kids but we’re paying for foreigners to have kids and replace us

@Snama551672 @WallStreetApes Suburbs of Boston cost just as much. There’s a lot of reason for why infant care its so expensive here - it’s very regulated. 1 teacher to 3 infant ratio. A state like Rhode Island is 1 to 5, this costing less

@WallStreetApes That breaks down to $38 an hour. To pay for toys, food, beds, cribs, licenses, rent in a big city, taxes, and two or more helpers, that makes sense. Either move to the suburbs where some of that is less expensive, but then you need transportation, or stay home.

let us acknowledge that 1) women work now and that bell isn't going to be unrung, but also 2) being a dual working parent family with small kids is an extremely stressful and unpleasant lifestyle, and a major barrier to people having >2 kids. I don't know what the solution is. Surely it has to involve normalizing women taking extended breaks from the workforce during the small kid years. I would have loved to do that but was frankly terrified of never getting another job, and I simply don't have the temperament to be a long term SAHM.

@lymanstoneky As a business owner there’s no way I could have had more than 2 while holding traditional employment. The women I know really enjoy work and a larger family in motherhood are either self employed; web designers / etc or business owners

@Empty_America I don’t think it’s that either. It comes down to parents much more strongly value being able to give their kids individual time and attention. The more kids you have, the less time, love, attention and material recourses you can give each kid.
