When I played street football, it involved: Jumpers as goalposts Avoiding park benches Funny bounces off the kerbs Shopping trolleys as small goals Crawling to get the ball under cars ...and all ages from 10 to 18 years Can this be recreated in academies?

@SimonMajumdar It goes through a cycle appreciation every decade in UK. The Fall wrote a song about it. I think the book sold really well in the UK, but never took off in US 🤷

You’re probably not coaching to create the next Messi. You are coaching to help young players fall in love with the game. The reality is that fewer than 0.1% of players will ever reach the professional level. But 100% of them can experience joy, belonging, confidence, and personal growth through football. So the real question is: When they leave training or a match, do they want to come back? Do they head home desperate to grab a ball and play again? Do they feel excited for the next session? Do they talk about their team with pride? Or are they leaving disheartened… anxious… already drifting away from the sport? Our responsibility at grassroots is simple: Create environments where passion thrives. Where development is guided, but fun is never sacrificed. Where every player feels valued, supported, and encouraged to try, fail, and try again. If we keep them loving football, we keep them in football and that is the biggest win we can achieve.

@power_ray Depends on the individual. I’ve had same agreements with HS boys to let them walk it off until they can process everything and then there’s some that do better with a flat out ‘knock it off’. It’s all about relationships and knowing your players.

I used to have an agreement with a player (18) that if he 'saw red', we'd exchange a gesture and he could come straight off, leave (as he often felt embarrassed afterwards), then we would address it calmly the next day Moments of vulnerability are development gold — if handled with care. @power_ray Using non specific words or phrases like ‘unlucky’ or ‘nice work’. The other one is giving coaching points and finishing off with ‘do you understand?’.
