Some exciting professional news: I'm pleased to share that my book, tentatively titled John Fulton Reynolds: American Soldier, Union Martyr, is under contract at @lsupress and slated for LSUP's "Conflicting Worlds: New Dimensions of the American Civil War" series.

I’ve re-watched this ~ 20 times, and two things continue to stand out: first, Boozer needed only to draw the foul, but seems to have panicked; second, two Duke defenders *might* have been able to give a non-shooting foul prior to the final heave. Both failures of court awareness.

All Cayden Boozer had to do was hold it. That will haunt him.

@MGKlingenberg @RBrookhiser Ike and Freeman were good friends and he helped persuade him to run for President. And Nimitz read Freeman’s work while he was at Pearl Harbor. Not sure about MacArthur but he was proud of his uncles who fought under Stonewall even though his dad fought for the Union.

A portrait of victory.

@RBrookhiser Nimitz and Eisenhower at Douglas Southall Freeman’s house in Richmond this month in 1946, both were avid readers of his works; can’t imagine having two more steady hands at the helm.

@IVMiles Yes I think so. As the British got closer to Jerusalem in October and November 1917 many officers and men, not just Allenby, became more aware of Christianity and could feel the significance of the moment; frequently referencing the Bible or stories of Richard the Lionheart

Good point; I do think that Allenby was more aware of his own Christian piety in the weeks preceding than he had been. His nickname--The Bull--was not for gentleness. And his relationship w Christianity was passionate and, apparently, inconsistent.
Nick Lloyd@nick_lloy

@bazzdgrogan @IVMiles Yes there is no doubt Allenby took it very seriously, and was obviously still deeply affected by grief, but the actual entry into the city was choreographed for a global audience

My latest No, the Iran War Will Not Cement China’s Superpower Status Response to The Financial Times Riyadh is coordinating with Washington, not Beijing, on how to contain Iranian aggression. Similarly, the UAE, which signed the Abraham Accords and has spent the years since deepening its defense architecture with Washington, is consolidating its alignment. Superpower status in practical terms means other states call you when the missiles start flying, denominate their reserves in your currency, and trust your diplomatic channels to hold when the pressure is on. On every one of those measures, the Gulf is turning to Washington, not Beijing. zinebriboua.com/p/no-the-iran-…

“If I ever have a son, I don’t want him to go through this again, but I want him powerful enough that no one will be fool enough to touch him. He and America should be strong as hell and kind as Christ. That’s the only insurance until human nature becomes a tangible thing that can be adjusted and made workable.” [3/3] Letter of LT Thomas Meehan III, CO, E Company, 506th PIR, 101st Airborne Division, to his wife, May 1944. “And yet, with all that, we can’t get away from the rest. … For each of us who wants to live in happiness and give happiness, there’s another different sort of person wanting to take it away. Those people always manage to have their say, and Mars is always close at hand. We know how to win wars. We must learn now to win peace.  Stick our noses in the affairs of the world.  Learn politics as well as killing. Make the world accept peace whether they damn well like it or not. Here is the dove, and here is the bayonet. … [2/3]

“We’re fortunate in being Americans. At least we don’t step on the underdog. I wonder if that’s because there are no ‘Americans’ — only a stew of immigrants; or if it’s because the earth from which we exist has been so kind to us and our forefathers; or if it’s because the ‘American’ is the offspring of the logical European who hated oppression and loved freedom beyond life? Those great mountains and tall timber; the cool deep lakes and broad rivers; the green valleys and white farmhouses; the air, the sea and wind; the plains and great cities; the smell of living — all must be the cause of it. … [a thread; 1/3]

I’m as [r]epublican as they come, forever grateful for 1776, no fan of monarchy, and certainly no enthusiast of British political culture in its current state, but this hit hard. Old Britain was built different. “The King called He answered The King of Kings called He answered”
