As part of our engagements at the Education World Forum 2026 in London, I met with Baroness Smith, UK Minister of State for Skills, to advance discussions on Nigeria UK collaboration in skills development, TVET reform, and workforce readiness. Our discussions focused on the sectors shaping the future global economy including clean energy, health services, engineering, digital technology, and AI, and how we can better equip young Nigerians with the skills needed to thrive in them. We also exchanged ideas on apprenticeships, accreditation, and raising the prestige of technical and vocational education. There is much we can learn from one another as we continue to strengthen Nigeria’s TVET ecosystem under the Nigerian Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI). I also welcomed the growing interest from UK institutions to deepen collaboration with Nigerian agencies including NBTE, FTCs, and IQM through curriculum development, staff exchanges, and skills partnerships. Nigeria is not just reforming education, we are building pathways that give our young people real opportunities to compete, innovate, and succeed on the global stage.

The Nigeria Police Force is aware of the viral video involving ASP Newton Isokpehi. Our response has been swift, decisive, and clear. The officer has been identified, and disciplinary procedures have commenced at the Anambra State Command. IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, has taken further action. Alongside disciplinary proceedings, he has ordered a mental evaluation, medical assessment, and drug testing for ASP Isokpehi to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation. Accountability in this case involves both appropriate consequences and institutional understanding. We affirm that all Nigerians and officers have the right to lawfully record police officers performing their duties. This right is real, protected, and will be upheld by the Force. However, this right carries responsibilities. Recordings that obstruct operations, compromise officer safety, or endanger the public are not protected. There is a clear distinction between lawful accountability and interference with police duties. WHEN LAWFUL BOUNDARIES ARE RESPECTED BY ALL PARTIES, accountability and public safety can coexist effectively. ASP Isokpehi’s actions and comments were inappropriate, threatening, and unprofessional. He is therefore subject to disciplinary measures. The outcome of this disciplinary process will be made public. We are committed to ensuring transparency.

NPF CONDEMNS THREATENING CONDUCT BY POLICE OFFICER IN VIRAL VIDEO, ORDERS IMMEDIATE DISCIPLINARY ACTION The Nigeria Police Force has taken cognisance of a viral video circulating on social media involving ASP Newton Isokpehi, in which the officer was seen making threatening remarks against members of the public filming police activities. The Force wishes to state unequivocally that the conduct and utterances exhibited in the video are unacceptable, unprofessional, and inconsistent with the ethics, standards, and code of conduct of the Nigeria Police Force. Such actions run contrary to the ongoing reform initiatives of the Force aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, professionalism, and citizen-focused policing. The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, has consistently maintained that members of the public have the right to lawfully record police officers carrying out their duties, provided such recording does not obstruct operations, compromise safety, or interfere with lawful police activities. In line with this position, the officer involved has since been identified and summoned to the Anambra State Command Headquarters where immediate disciplinary procedures have commenced. The Nigeria Police Force does not tolerate threats, intimidation, abuse of office, or any conduct capable of undermining public trust and confidence in law enforcement institutions. The Force further reiterates that recording police activities remains a legitimate tool for public accountability and transparency and should not, in itself, attract harassment or intimidation from police personnel while discharging their duties. A formal statement detailing the outcome of the disciplinary measures taken against the officer will be communicated in due course. The Nigeria Police Force appreciates members of the public for their continued partnership and constructive engagement in promoting accountability, professionalism, and improved policing standards across the country. On the sidelines of the Education World Forum 2026 in London, I signed a landmark partnership with @coursera to launch the Digital Training Academy (DTA), a major initiative designed to equip Nigerian youths with globally competitive digital skills. Through this programme, young Nigerians will receive world class training in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Cybersecurity, Cloud Computing, Software Engineering and other high demand digital fields, while earning globally recognised certifications valued by employers across the world. In a landmark investment under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President @officialABAT, GCFR, the Federal Government has fully funded 36,000 licences across Coursera and @pluralsight in the first year alone ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent any Nigerian youth from accessing world class digital education. This is one of the largest government funded digital skills investments in Nigeria’s history. The programme will be implemented in partnership with the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), combining nationwide access with industry focused mentorship and support. Digital competency is no longer optional. It is foundational. We are building a generation of young Nigerians that can compete, lead and thrive in the global digital economy. My sincere appreciation to Coursera, NOUN and YABATECH for partnering with us to make this vision a reality.

At the ongoing World Education Forum 2026 in London, I joined a special session hosted by His Royal Highness, Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, titled “Empowering Learners Through Non-Formal Education.” The conversation focused on how governments can better equip young people with the skills, opportunities, and support systems needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world. I shared Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to expand non-formal education as a critical tool for job creation, youth empowerment, and lifelong learning under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. I highlighted key initiatives including our TVET programme, the Accelerated Basic Education Programme for out-of-school children, entrepreneurship and innovation training, as well as digital skills development designed to prepare young Nigerians for both today’s economy and the future workforce. The panel session was also attended by other key leaders including Paul Calandra, Minister of Education, Ontario Canada; Raquel Teixeira, Secretary of State for Education, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil; and Andrea Chakma, International Youth Representative, DofE International Award Foundation. Our goal remains clear: to ensure that every Nigerian child and youth, regardless of background or circumstance, has access to the knowledge, skills, and opportunities needed to succeed. I extend my sincere thanks to His Royal Highness, Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, for the invitation to participate in this important conversation. #EWF26
