Recently, a state attorney described @MaleMabiriziHKK as “irresponsible” for not having a passport. Today, another described a retired magistrate as “too poor” to stand surety for his own son. Both submissions are plainly ridiculous, however, the state attorney’s role is to sell a story - just like the Kampala conductor who claims the taxi is full, then makes you wait for 30 minutes to fill it up. The real absurdity is that each of the magistrates in these cases bought the arguments made and used them as a basis to deny bail. Poverty - the thing Uganda is known for - and a document that only 3 per cent of Ugandans have should never be used as basis for denying bail Ugandans bail! Not even in a bad dream!
