Even if you say Nmecha gets a touch on the ball, Maddison would still have control of the ball when Nmecha goes through him. Why does him getting a toenail on the ball mean the action just suddenly comes to a stop?

The rules aren’t ambiguous because then how do we determine what’s enough of a touch. It’s a touch or not
