@mjones_books @AConcernedPare2 …and that is wonderful. Of course kids should (also) read on their own. But early on, teachers should guide their classes through excellent literature, explaining how the author uses the tools in his rhetorical toolbox.

My 7th grader is having a meltdown because his English teacher is making them read a book every month (of their choosing!) and write an essay about it. The essays must be 5 paragraphs long, roughly 1 page double-spaced. This is "honors" English in 2025. 🫠
