Meet the male Asian Paradise Flycatcher, a vision of grace, with two ribbon-like tail feathers that can stretch up to 30 cm. It’s tail is longer than his own body of just 19–22 cm. But this beauty isn’t vanity. During courtship, those ribbons flutter and swirl in dazzling displays to win over a mate. Only mature males, usually after two to three years, grow these full-length streamers, while females and juveniles remain without them. Found in both rufous and pure white forms, this insect-hunter darts mid-air to catch flies and beetles. It raises its young during the breeding season between May and July. Both parents share the work, often nesting near vigilant drongos for extra protection. Though listed as “Least Concern” on the IUCN Red List, the flycatcher faces threats from shrinking habitats. Nature gave him beauty with purpose, not for show. What’s the one trait you carry that’s not just ornamental, but meaningful?
